Die Romanistik verfügt im Bereich der Historischen Sprachwissenschaft über die privilegierte Situation, daß sie - unter der Einbeziehung der Vorgängersprache Latein - auf eine fast dreitausendjährige Dokumentation zurückgreifen kann. Eine solche Quellenlage gestattet es, fast jeder sprachhistorischen Fragestellung nachzugehen und unter weitgehendem Verzicht auf Spekulationen Methoden zu entwickeln und Thesen zu überprüfen. Diese Sondersituation nutzend setzt sich die Romanische Sprachgeschichte zum Ziel, einerseits die Systemhaftigkeit von Sprechen und Schreiben in der Romania darzustellen, andererseits die Bedingtheit derartigen menschlichen Handelns durch - selbst dem Wandel der Zeiten unterworfene - areale, soziale und situative Gesetzmäßigkeiten sowie durch kulturhistorische und literarische Determinanten zu erkennen; in beiden Aspekten überwindet sie die - besonders für die Romania typische - Konzentration auf die Geschichte der Nationalsprachen und gibt den Varietätenkontinua der romanischen Kommunikationsräume eine diachronische Dimension. Durch die thematisch parallele oder kontrastive Behandlung der verschiedenen romanischen Sprachen und Sprachräume ist es möglich, wie in einem Laboratorium Divergenzen, aber auch Konvergenzen der Entwicklung unter verschiedenen soziohistorischen Gegebenheiten zu beobachten und zu analysieren. The book supplies profiles of the language families of Europe, including the sign languages.
