In diesen konnte sich ein kleines gallisches Dorf immer wieder und nahezu spielend leicht gegen die mächtigen Römer behaupten und so ihr eigenes kleines Dorf inmitten des römischen Reiches am Leben halten. Heute wissen wir, dass es tatsächlich Gebiete im Römischen Reich gab, in denen sich die Bevölkerung ähnlich erfolgreich gegen den römischen Imperialismus zur Wehr gesetzt hat. Sucht man ein Pendant zu dem in den Comics vorgestelltem gallischen Dorf im römischen Reich, stößt man auf die Bergregion der damaligen römischen Provinz Kilikien. Auch dieses Gebiet konnte sich der römischen Herrschaft entziehen, da die Römer die Bergregion der Provinz nicht unter ihre Kontrolle brachten. Diese Seminararbeit geht der Frage nach, warum die Römer die Bergregion der Provinz Kilikien nicht eroberten und zu einem Teil des römischen Reiches machten. Als Quellengrundlage der Arbeit dienen die Briefe Ciceros an seine Freunde sowie an Atticus. Ciceros Erzählungen dienen nachfolgend als Grundlage, um die Sichtweisen der Römer im Bezug auf die Provinz verstehen zu können. Desweiteren wird auf die Überlieferungen von Livius sowie von Polybios zurückgegriffen. Die neuesten ausführlichen Informationen aus der Forschung zum Thema bietet das Buch "Barbarische Bürger" von Karl Feld, an welchem sich die Hausarbeit orientiert. Desweiteren dienen die Forschungen von Bent Shaw, welche er in seinem Artikel mit dem Titel "Bandit Highlands and Lowland Peace" aufzeigt, als wichtige Grundlage.

This volume aims to present the current state of research on Roman roads and their foundations in a combined historical and archaeological perspective. The focus is on the diverse local histories and the varying degrees of significance of individual roads and regional networks, which are treated here for the most important regions of the empire and beyond. The assembled contributions will be of interest to historians, archaeologists and epigraphers, since they tackle matters as diverse as the technical modalities of road-building, the choice of route, but also the functionality and the motives behind the creation of roads. Roman roads are further intimately related to various important aspects of Roman history, politics and culture. After all, such logistical arteries form the basis of all communication and exchange processes, enabling not only military conquest and security but also facilitating the creation of an organized state as well as trade, food supply and cultural exchange. The study of Roman roads must always be based on a combination of written and archaeological sources in order to take into account both their concrete geographical location and their respective spatial, cultural, and historical context.

In dieser religionsgeographisch angelegten Studie werden die Spuren des frühen Christentums im kilikisch-isaurischen Bergland untersucht. Dabei wird eine bislang wenig beachtete Region ins Zentrum gerückt und auf Basis der kaiserzeitlichen und spätantiken epigraphischen, literarischen und archäologischen Zeugnisse erforscht. Ausgehend von den zahlreichen jüdischen Gemeinden entwickelten sich schon zur Zeit des Paulus die ersten christlichen Gemeinden. In späterer Zeit waren die vielen verschiedenen Märtyrerkulte in den einzelnen Städten von überragender Bedeutung für die Christianisierung der Landschaft. Neben vielen stark lokal verankerten Kulten erfuhren die Heilige Thekla und der Heilige Konon Verehrung in der ganzen Region und waren somit regionale Heilige. Ein dichtes Netz frühbyzantinischer Kirchenbauten, die zum Teil noch heute gut erhalten sind, belegt die umfassende Christianisierung des Gebietes. Unter dem aus Isaurien stammenden Kaiser Zenon wurden die regionalen Kulte in der östlichen Reichshälfte verbreitet. Die vorliegende Untersuchung der Kalykadnos-Region führt das Quellenmaterial zusammen und wertet es erstmals monographisch aus.

The theatre of Diokaisareia (Cilicia, Asia Minor) has been partially excavated in 1993 by a team of Turkish archaeologists, when a large part of the cavea and part of the scaena have been brought to light. On this occasion many elements of the architectural decoration were uncovered and a significant fragment of the dedicatory inscription was rediscovered. This text allows to date the building during the principate of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, making this theatre the only dated monument so far in Roman Cilicia. Now the remains have been studied within the German research project directed by Detlev Wannagat. The purpose of the volume is to make a complete survey of the main architectural features of the theatre. Starting from the collation of travellers' notes and photographs, in breadth and detail Marcello Spanu analyses and illustrates all available data. The study provides a detailed survey of the ancient structures and a thorough catalogue of all the preserved architectural elements, accompanied by an accurate graphic and photographic documentation. Starting from these data, the author proposes the reconstruction of the monument, taking into account its main features and its situation within the ancient city's topographic layout. The book offers new light on the researches on Cilicia and on Asia Minor, proposing new hypothesis on architecture of ancient theatres and on architectural decoration history.
