The human condition in rural, provincial locations is once again gaining status as a subject of European ‘high fiction’, after several decades in which it was dismissed on aesthetic and ideological grounds. This volume is one of the first attempts to investigate perspectives on local cultures, values and languages both systematically and in a European context. It does so by examining the works of a variety of authors, including Hugo Claus, Llamazares, Bergounioux and Millet, Buffalino and Consolo, and also several Soviet authors, who paint a grim picture of a collectivized – and thus ossified – rurality. How do these themes relate to the ongoing trend of globalization? How do these works, which are often experimental, connect – in their form, topics, language and ideological subtext – to the traditional rural or regional genres? Far from naively celebrating a lost Eden, most of these ‘new Georgics’ reflect critically on the tensions in contemporary, peripheral, rural or regional cultures, to the point of parodying the traditional topoi and genres. Il y a des régions où l'on se sert des mots pour se confier et même, à la rigueur, pour dire ce qu'on pense. Les Provençaux en font un autre usage : ils s'abritent derrière eux pour tenter de dissimuler ce qu'ils ressentent. Notamment, qu'ils ont le sens tragique de la vie et que l'idée de mourir un jour leur empoisonne l'existence. Il y a de la pudeur, de la politesse et tout un art de vivre dans leur refus de "parler de ce qui fâche". Les Provençaux passent pour superficiels et légers, alors qu'ils s'étourdissent de leur propre vacarme pour ne pas entendre les battements d'aile du temps qui s'envole inexorablement, pour essayer d'oublier cette angoisse essentielle. La Provence n'existe vraiment que dans ce qu'elle tait. La Provence est un silence partagé. Dans la première partie de cet ouvrage. j'ai rassemblé les contes où la tragédie essaie ainsi de se faire oublier et porte le masque de la jovialité. Mon village de Fontvieille, ma résidence poétique préférée, est devenu le lieu de naissance de mes personnages, et mon pigeonnier, par la même occasion, non pas ma tour d'ivoire mais ma tour de contrôle. Je n'ai pas pris mes distances avec la réalité quotidienne : je me suis installé à un poste d'observation dont je ne cesse de descendre pour me mêler à la vie de tous les jours. Ici, l'indifférence se fait chaleureuse et le désespoir de bonne compagnie. Les romans de la deuxième partie se déroulent en Camargue. Là-bas, la passion et la folie ont le droit de se montrer à visage découvert. Ces lieux où la terre et la mer se confondent, où la création du monde n'est pas achevée, foui entendre aux oreilles attentives le murmure, des civilisations englouties et la sourde explosion des origines. Un jour, peut-être, vous entendrez sous la galopade des taureaux le piétinement sourd des légions romaines en marche. Cela dépend de vous. Mon rôle à moi s'arrête là. J'aurai, du moins, tenté de vous montrer le chemin. Y.A.
