In this erudite and wide-ranging discussion of postmodernism and romanticism in twentieth-century art and philosophy, Jos de Mul sheds a fascinating light on the ambivalent character of our present culture, which oscillates between modern enthusiasm and postmodern irony. Along the way, he engages the work of such thinkers as Nietzsche, Freud, Heidegger, Habermas, Lacan, Barthes, and Derrida; visual artists Magritte and Stella; poets Georg and Coleridge; and composers Schonberg, Cage, and Reich, among others, providing a sort of intellectual history of Romantic, Modernist, and Postmodernist "tempers."

Fictions And Fakes written by Margaret Russett and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-02-02 with Literary Criticism categories.

British Romantic literature descends from a line of impostors, forgers and frauds. Through a series of case-studies - beginning with the golden age of forgery in the late eighteenth century and continuing through canonical Romanticism and its aftermath - Margaret Russett demonstrates how Romantic writers distinguished their fictions from the fakes surrounding them. The book examines canonical and lesser-known Romantic works alongside fakes such as Thomas Chatterton's medieval poems and 'Caraboo', the impostor-princess. Through original readings of works by Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Walter Scott, John Clare, and James Hogg, as well as chapters on impostors in popular culture, Russett's interdisciplinary and wide-ranging study offers a major reinterpretation of Romanticism and its continuing influence today.

Engaged Romanticism written by Mark Lussier and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-05-27 with Literary Criticism categories.

In November 2006, the International Conference on Romanticism convened for its annual conference on the campus of Arizona State University and explored a wide range of work identified as “engaged romantic,” as a mode and a practice, rather than simply as a literary historical period defined by a specific temporal spectrum (c. 1750-1850). As the introduction to the volume suggests, most writers during the period were actively engaged in the cultural articulation of the aesthetics, criticism, ethics, poetics, and politics of the age, and a large number of writers deployed their talents to help transform the public sphere, whether shaping responses to the practices of slavery or resisting the emergence of a crystallized form of Newtonianism at the foundation of Enlightenment epistemology. The intellectual and disciplinary range of the essays included in this volume pay tribute to this often neglected aspect of the revolutionary dictates of what has come to be called “Romanticism,” and the following critical essays, offered by both thoroughly established and relatively new voices within Romantic Studies, examine virtually every aspect of this approach to Romantic thought and writing. Whether focused on the formal and intellectual practices at the foundation of the novel, the philosophical resonance of William Wordsworth within emergent forms of eco-criticism, the play of the transatlantic Romantic imagination, the aesthetic commitments of Romantic art and music, or the current process of pedagogical engagements, the essays sound the depths of what engaged practice can accomplish, both in the age of Romanticism itself as well as our own moment.

The Portrait In Fiction Of The Romantic Period written by Joe Bray and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-26 with Literary Criticism categories.

Beginning with the premise that the portrait was undergoing a shift in both form and function during the Romantic age, Joe Bray examines how these changes are reflected in the fiction of writers such as Maria Edgeworth, Jane Austen, Sir Walter Scott, Elizabeth Hamilton and Amelia Opie. Bray considers portraiture in a broad sense as encompassing caricature and the miniature, as well as the classic portraits of Sir Joshua Reynolds and others. He argues that the portrait in fiction often functions not as a transparent index to character or as a means of producing a straightforward likeness, but rather as a cue for misreading and a sign of the slipperiness and subjectivity of interpretation. The book is concerned with more than simply the appearance of portraits in Romantic fiction, however. More broadly, The Portrait in Fiction of the Romantic Period investigates how the language of portraiture pervades the novel in this period and how the two art forms exert mutual stylistic influence on each other.
