Le sue avventure lo porteranno per boschi incantati e case stregate abitate da lebbrosi giganti, diavoli e nani, finchè egli non sconfiggerà l'arrogante Taulat. Ma il suo viaggio è anche un'iniziazione all'amore per l'incontro con la bella castellana Brunissen, che sarà sua sposa. Il romanzo di Jaufre, di un anonimo autore occitano, propone dunque il tipico schema di armi e amori che caratterizza il romanzo arturiano medievale fin dalla sua codificazione ad opera di Chretien de Troyes. Tra le sue pieghe, però, si scorge una tradizione alternativa, incarnata dalla fata di Gibel, allusione al mito di Artù nell'Etna, ovvero il Mongibello, e a tutta una materia arturiana 'mediterranea', che si contrappone a quella francese. La riscrittura della traduzione oitanica, con riferimenti letterali, è ricca di spunti comici e aprodici, e si avvale di numerosi richiami alle convenzioni della lirica dei trovatori, nel tentativo di proporre un nuovo modello di cavalleria meridionale da apporre a un re Artù ormai incapace di far fronte ai suoi compiti istituzionali. Quel nuovo cavaliere è Jaufre, figura del re d'Aragona, mai menzionato per nome, ma a cui è dedicato il romanzo a cui fa appello l'autore per salvare il sud della Francia dopo la tragedia della Crociata contro gli Albigesi."--Page 4 de la couverture
