Excerpt from Rome and the Making of Modern Europe IN 1886 - 7 the author Of this book prepared a primer of Roman history upon a plan devised by John H. Vincent. The volume, which was entitled An Outline History of Rome, was placed upon the Chautauqua reading course for. The en suing year, where it gave a considerable degree Of satis faction - perhaps quite as much as was to be expected of a sketch so brief and bony. The aim Of the book had been to restrict the work to the Significant events and important actors, sacrificing dramatic form and picturesque detail to the necessity Of condensation. The present work is an extension of the Outline History, so as to cover the historical period which bridges the gap be tween the Roman Empire and Modern Europe. The first Six chapters are substantially a reprint of the former volume; the seventh has been rewritten; the three remaining chap ters are new. Excerpt from Stories From the History of Rome It was necessary that the stories should be such as would interest little children. But the writer has also selected them with a view to illustrate the two senti ments most characteristic of Roman manners - duty to parents and duty to country. She has, moreover, tried to indicate that the latter of these sentiments took precedence of the former. A healthy moral lesson is thus conveyed, while at the same time the most essential feature of the Roman civilization is impressed on the memory. The History Of Rome Classic Reprint written by Titus Livius and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-17 with History categories.

"Livy (Titus Livius), the great Roman historian, was born at Patavium (Padua) in 64 or 59 BC, where after years in Rome he died in AD 12 or 17. Livy's history, composed as the imperial autocracy of Augustus was replacing the republican system that had stood for over 500 years, presents in splendid style a vivid narrative of Rome's rise from the traditional foundation of the city in 753 or 751 BC to 9 BC and illustrates the collective and individual virtues necessary to achieve and maintain such greatness. Of its 142 books, conventionally divided into pentads and decads, we have 1-10 and 21-45 complete, and short summaries (periochae) of all the rest except 41 and 43-45; 11-20 are lost, and of the rest only fragments and the summaries remain. The fourth decade comprises two recognizable pentads: Books 31-35 narrate the Second Macedonian War (200-196) and its aftermath, then Books 36-40 the years from 191 to 180, when Rome crushed and shrank Antiochus' empire to extend and consolidate her mastery over the Hellenistic states. This edition replaces the original Loeb edition by Evan T. Sage."--Publisher's description.
