Ronald Bladen written by Robert S. Mattison and has been published by National Geographic Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-11-12 with Art categories.

The first monograph on a pivotal figure of postwar American art Best known for his monumental sculptures, Ronald Bladen (1918–1988) was regarded as an artistic forerunner by such minimalist artists as Donald Judd, Sol Lewitt, and Carl Andre. But in contrast to the matter-of-fact work of these artists, Bladen’s sculptures are charged with emotional power. They fill entire rooms, pressing outward against the walls and ceiling; their themes include the force of gravity, the dynamism of planar surfaces, the impact of scale, and confrontation with the viewer. This splendidly illustrated book presents a comprehensive overview of Bladen's career: his breakthrough works such as Untitled (Three Elements), a standout at the Jewish Museum’s legendary Primary Structures exhibition of 1966; his monumental outdoor commissions of the late 1960s through the 1980s; and his reflective wall reliefs of 1980s. Bladen’s drawings and working models are discussed in detail, and his early career as a painter is considered in the light of his later sculptural oeuvre. Art historian Robert S. Mattison’s thoughtful analysis of Bladen’s art is informed not only by extensive archival research but also by numerous interviews with Bladen’s contemporaries, including fellow artists like Bill Jensen, Alex Katz, and Dorothea Rockburne. In addition, this volume collects several of the most important critical essays on Bladen, by Irving Sandler, April Kingsley, Bill Berkson, and Naomi Spector. The full scholarly apparatus includes an illustrated chronology of the artist's life and career. Today, Bladen's works are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art, Storm King Art Center, and the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, among many others. His grasp of the expressive power of mass and abstract form continues to influence sculptors from Richard Serra to Ursula von Rydingsvard. Here, finally, is a book that reveals and elucidates the full extent of his achievement.

He was regarded as an artistic forerunner by Minimalist artists such as Donald Judd, Sol Lewitt, and Carl Andre. His large objects fill entire rooms, and his themes include the force of gravity, the dynamism of planar surfaces, the impact of scale, and the emotional power of confrontation with the viewer.Bladen's early career took place in San Francisco where he created Earth Drawings made from soil and water, as well as powerful, densely textured paintings that suggest topographical forces. He moved to New York City in 1956, where he became a founding member of the cooperative Brata Gallery and produced collages of folder paper followed by plywood reliefs that were exhibited at Green Gallery. He then devoted his attention to grand, freestanding sculptures. He exhibited Three Elements in the breakthrough exhibition Primary Structures at The Jewish Museum in 1966, and presented his enormous sculpture X in the courtyard of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.During the later 1960s and 1970s, Bladen received important public commissions for towering steel works in New York City, Seattle, Albany, Buffalo, Baltimore, Düsseldorf, Germany, and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This first monographic study of Bladen's art connects him to the artistic, intellectual, and social forces of his age. Copiously illustrated, it presents a comprehensive record of his oeuvre and documentary photographs of his working process, in addition to a complete chronology, bibliography, and exhibitions list. This tapestry of primary sources is an essential primer on sculpture and its makers. Modern Sculpture presents a selection of manifestos, documents, statements, articles, and interviews from more than ninety sculptors, including a diverse selection of contemporary sculptors. With this book, editor Douglas Dreishpoon defers to artists, whose varied points of view illuminate sculpture’s transformation—from object to action, concept to phenomenon—over the course of more than a century. Chapters arranged in chronological sequences highlight dominant stylistic, philosophical, and thematic threads uniting kindred groups. The result is an artist-centric history of sculpture as a medium of consequence and character.

Inside The Painter S Studio written by Joe Fig and has been published by Chronicle Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-06-19 with Design categories.

Inside an art gallery, it is easy to forget that the paintings there are the end products of a process involving not only creative inspiration, but also plenty of physical and logistical details. It is these "cruder," more mundane aspects of a painter's daily routine that motivated Brooklyn artist Joe Fig to embark almost ten years ago on a highly unorthodox, multilayered exploration of the working life of the professional artist. Determined to ground his research in the physical world, Fig began constructing a series of diorama-like miniature reproductions of the studios of modern art's most legendary painters, such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. A desire for firsthand references led Fig to approach contemporary artists for access to their studios. Armed with a camera and a self-made "Artist's Questionnaire," Fig began a journey through the workspaces of some of today's most exciting contemporary artists.
