Als Rosa Luxemburg 1913 dazu aufrief, den Kriegsdienst zu verweigern, wurde sie mit einer Haftstrafe belegt. Ihre Briefe aus dem Gefängnis (an ihre Freundin Sophie Liebknecht) sind das einzigartige Zeugnis einer starken, unabhängigen Frau, die ihre politischen Überzeugungen auch unter den grausamsten Umständen nicht aufgab und dafür letztendlich mit ihrem Leben bezahlte. Rosa Luxemburg steht sowohl für Marxismus als auch Antimilitarismus. Als Führerin der deutschen Arbeiterbewegung und Mitbegründerin der KPD gilt sie als eine der einflussreichsten Frauen ihrer Zeit. Die "Briefe aus dem Gefängnis" schrieb Rosa Luxemburg während ihrer Haft vom Juli 1916 bis November 1918 in der Festung Wronke bei Posen und dann in Breslau. Das Schreiben erhält ihr den Kontakt zu ihren Freunden und politischen Weggefährten. Ihr Mitstreiter Karl Liebknecht war zu ihrem Entsetzen am 23. August zu 49 Monaten Zuchthaus verurteilt worden. Erst später kommen beide auf Grund einer Amnestie der Preußischen Regierung frei. Diese Sammlung von Briefen ist ein literarisches Zeugnis von Seltenheitswert: Sie enthalten sehr persönliche und ungewohnt poetische Texte der Journalistin Rosa Luxemburg. Hier erlebt man eine junge Frau, hin- und hergerissen zwischen politischen Idealen, ihrer Kräfte raubenden Radikalität und einer sehr weiblichen Sehnsucht nach Geborgenheit und Angenommen-Sein. Und man bekommt beim Zuhören ein Gefühl von der Stärke dieser kompromisslos mutigen Frau und ihrer ungebrochenen Zuversicht.
