"O biógrafo é um comerciante de detalhes", afirma Pierre Assouline na introdução de Rosebud. O título é uma referência ao filme Cidadão Kane, de Orson Welles, uma espécie de cinebiografia do magnata da imprensa William Randolph Hearst, que expira nas telas apegando-se a uma lembrança escondida em sua infância. Ainda durante a cerimônia, Assouline aponta pequenos sinais de decadência da aristocracia e os maus presságios, mais tarde confirmados, que marcaram a união.
