Rotas de Fuga é um romance em que a diversidade de vozes narrativas, acrescida de uma linguagem na qual domina uma atmosfera de incertezas e de ambiguidades, justificam o estilo da narração. Tem como protagonista Helena, quem, na pretensão de escrever um romance, sentindo-se traída pela memória, busca auxílio em um narrador que a socorre quando do preenchimento dos seus vazios. Na condição de narradora depara-se com bloqueios que vão se insinuando no enredo e que por vezes a levam a interromper o discurso. Como compensação à precariedade da sua memória recorre aos sonhos (?) — os maiores responsáveis pela citada ambiguidade — por lhe provocarem o despertar de uma memória ficcionada, desvinculada, na maior parte das vezes, da temporalidade. É quando o imaginário fica responsável pelo estado de encantamento em que costumeiramente se refugia. A presença de elementos autobiográficos desperta, em Helena, a memória íntima de um tempo; e é quando realidade e fantasia se confundem, cedendo lugar à imaginação — o que ocorre já no início da narrativa. Uma história que não se fecha onde a protagonista, na pretensão de realizar o sonho há muito acalentado — o de escrever um romance —, é surpreendida por situações que a despertam para o autoconhecimento. Perseguir um sonho, a partir daí, vai sendo suplantado pela necessidade de antes se conhecer — necessidade que não consegue satisfazer. Daí a história não se fechar, transferindo ao leitor parte da responsabilidade por também preencher os vazios com os quais venha a se deparar com a leitura do romance. Um leitor participativo e crítico, portanto, é para quem a narrativa se volta. Um leitor suficientemente esclarecido e capaz de fazer uso da imaginação a fim de dar fechamento ao enredo. E aí está, em parte, a originalidade do livro, bem como sua contemporaneidade. Em síntese, o sonho de escrever um romance talvez não passe de uma camuflagem a ocultar, de Helena, o real motivo que a levou a narrar sua história: o da busca pelo seu papel cósmico, da sua inserção no mundo. No desenrolar da narrativa a protagonista deixa entrever o quanto é difícil escrever um romance.

Livro do Curso de Leitura 2022 - Jovens Heroísmo na Rota Secreta de John Weidner Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, Johan Hendrik Weidner (1912-1994), mais conhecido como John Henry Weidner, criou uma organização clandestina, a rede de fuga Dutch-Paris, que levava refugiados desde a Holanda até a Suíça ou a Espanha, atravessando a Bélgica e a França. Além de resgatar muitos judeus, algumas dessas pessoas auxiliadas por seu grupo foram o conde François de Menthon e Xavier de Gaulle. François foi um dos promotores do Tribunal Militar Internacional de Nuremberg, corte criada pelos Aliados para julgar os crimes contra a humanidade cometidos pelos nazistas. Xavier era irmão do grande general Charles de Gaulle, líder da Resistência Francesa e futuro presidente da nação. O capitão John Weidner foi um dos grandes heróis da Resistência Holandesa na Segunda Guerra Mundial. De 1940 a 1944, ele ajudou a resgatar aproximadamente 800 judeus e 100 aviadores aliados. Muitas dessas missões de resgate foram realizadas por ele mesmo e envolveram grande risco. Por vezes foi necessário escalar montanhas cobertas de neve e fazer longas caminhadas à noite. Em outras ocasiões foi preciso escapar da prisão, saltar de um trem em movimento, mergulhar em um rio enquanto atiravam em sua direção e fugir de soldados alemães esquiando montanha abaixo.

If ancient history is particularly susceptible to a top-down approach, due to the nature of our evidence and its traditional exploitation by modern scholars, another ancient history—‘from below’—is actually possible. This volume examines the possibilities and challenges involved in writing it. Despite undeniable advances in recent decades, ‘our slowness to reconstruct plausible visions of almost any aspect of society beyond the top-most strata of wealth, power or status’ (as Nicholas Purcell has put it) remains a persistent feature of the field. Therefore, this book concerns a historical field and social groups that are still today neglected by modern scholarship. However, writing ancient history ‘from below’ means much more than taking into account the anonymous masses, the subaltern classes and the non-elites. Our task is also, in the felicitous expression coined by Walter Benjamin, ‘to brush history against the grain,’ to rescue the viewpoint of the subordinated, the traditions of the oppressed. In other words, we should understand the bulk of ancient populations in light of their own experience and their own reactions to that experience. But, how do we do such a history? What sources can we use? What methods and approaches can we employ? What concepts are required to this endeavour? The contributions mainly engage with questions of theory and methodology, but they also constitute inspiring case studies in their own right, ranging from classical Greece to the late antique world. This book is aimed not only at readers working on classical Greece, republican and imperial Rome and late antiquity but at anyone interested in ‘bottom-up’ history and social and population history in general. Although the book is primarily intended for scholars, it will also appeal to graduate and undergraduate students of history, archaeology and classical studies.

Brazil, Land of the Past scrutinizes the ideological roots of the so-called New Right in Brazil. The book traces the continuity and resilience of a system of thought based on the idea of a God-given hierarchical order to be defended against any social contract and modernizing relativization. It explains in detail how today a diverse movement — which includes actors ranging from the authoritarian Bolsonaro wing to economic liberals to the military to both Catholic and evangelical religious conservatives – assumes unanimously the ideas of this tradition as underlying premises of their political action. Though not always explicitly, this drives the self-declared “liberal-conservative” but rather anti-modernist reaction which claims to liberate an imaginary authentic “Brazil” from an aberrant “State” – and in so doing intends to preserve inherited privilege in an extremely unequal society.
