This chapter provides an update on the most common zooplankton live feed species used in hatchery rearing of fish and shellfish larvae, namely rotifers, Artemia and copepods. Each section starts with a summary of the biology and ecology of these species. An overview of the most common techniques to culture, feed, harvest, disinfect and preserve these organisms is provided. Special attention is given to nutritional and microbiological aspects. Furthermore, new trends and developments are discussed.

This book highlights the latest advances in rotifer studies in various fields including aquaculture, ecology, gerontology and ecotoxicology. The genus Brachionus are an indispensable type of zooplankton, having served as an initial live food for marine larval rearing since the 1960s. Their mass culture techniques have been intensively studied, and some essential achievements have been made – regarding high density culture, employment of valuable dietary algae, automated culture systems, and effective production of resting eggs. These have in turn supported stable and efficient aquatic seedling production for numerous important marine fish species including flounder, sea bream, and bluefin tuna. Further, this group is considered to be a suitable model for studying various aspects in ecology. A series of aquaculture and basic science studies have significantly advanced our understanding of the life history evolution. The studies in these two fields are closely linked, and provide readers with comprehensive information on how rotifers are now being employed in biological investigations.

Microalgae remain an indispensible hatchery food for many aquaculture species, despite some on-going progress in the development of formulated larval feeds. The majority of the microalgae feed production occurs as living cultures on-site within hatcheries. In this review, general characteristics of microalgae are discussed, including chemical profiles, nutritional qualities and methods of mass culture. Key microalgal species are identified that are used as feeds leading to the hatchery production of bivalves, abalone, shrimp and fish. Global demand for microalgae production as hatchery feeds is likely to increase, requiring not only the expansion of existing infrastructure, but technical innovation to develop new production systems that are more intensive and have greater production capacity.

This proceedings volume includes selected papers presented at the international symposium `Live Food Organisms in Marine Larviculture' held in Nagasaki, Japan, September 1-4 1996. This international symposium focused on live food organisms for the larval rearing of marine animals. Recent achievements in the fundamental biology (such as physiology, ecology, taxonomy, life cycle and nutrition) of live planktonic animals used as feed in aquaculture were combined with recent technological advances on larval rearing methods. This volume also provides future directions for the application of basic science to the rearing of aquatic animals.

Handbook of Microalgal Culture is truly a landmarkpublication, drawing on some 50 years of worldwide experience inmicroalgal mass culture. This important book comprisescomprehensive reviews of the current available information onmicroalgal culture, written by 40 contributing authors from aroundthe globe. The book is divided into four parts, with Part I detailingbiological and environmental aspects of microalgae with referenceto microalgal biotechnology and Part II looking in depth at majortheories and techniques of mass cultivation. Part III compriseschapters on the economic applications of microalgae, includingcoverage of industrial production, the use of microalgae in humanand animal nutrition and in aquaculture, in nitrogen fixation, hydrogen and methane production, and in bioremediation of pollutedwater. Finally, Part IV looks at new frontiers and includeschapters on genetic engineering, microalgae as platforms forrecombinant proteins, bioactive chemicals, heterotrophicproduction, microalgae as gene-delivery systems for expressingmosquitocidal toxins and the enhancement of marine productivity forclimate stabilization and food security. Handbook of Microalgal Culture is an essential purchasefor all phycologists and also those researching aquatic systems, aquaculture and plant sciences. There is also much of great use toresearchers and those involved in product formulation withinpharmaceutical, nutrition and food companies. Libraries in alluniversities and research establishments teaching and researchingin chemistry, biological and pharmaceutical sciences, food sciencesand nutrition, and aquaculture will need copies of this book ontheir shelves. Amos Richmond is at the Blaustein Institute for DesertResearch, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel.

Marine Bioprocess Engineering written by J.G. Burgess and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-11-19 with Science categories.

This book contains full papers of both oral and poster presentations of the international symposium 'Marine Bioprocess Engineering' which was held in Noordwijkerhout, The Netherlands, 1998. The symposium focused on the bioprocessing of marine natural products. Bioprocess engineering has been the key to success in the commercialization of biotechnology, especially with respect to biopharmaceuticals. In marine biotechnology, both new and existing biotechnological techniques are developed an applied to organisms from marine sources. For marine biotechnology, bioprocess engineering represents the link between discovery and commercialization. The diversity of marine life points to a myriad of new bioproducts waiting to be discovered and developed commercially. The volume begins to bridge the gap between the isolation of products from marine organisms in the laboratory and industrial applications by focusing on the bioprocess-engineering aspects. Reviews and recent developments in product discovery, bio-energy production, cultivation of marine organisms, scale up and product recovery are presented. This publication should ensure that the engineering aspects of marine biotechnology will receive further attention in the future. Exploration of new bioproducts from the ocean should be followed up by a sustainable exploitation of these valuable resources.
