This Palgrave Pivot provides the first ever comprehensive consideration of the part played by women in the workings and business of the English Parliament in the later Middle Ages. Breaking new ground, this book considers all aspects of women’s access to the highest court of medieval England. Women were active supplicants to the Crown in Parliament, and sometimes appeared there in person to prosecute cases or make political demands. It explores the positions of women of varying rank, from queens to peasants, vis-à-vis this male institution, where they very occasionally appeared in person but were more usually represented by written petitions. A full analysis of these petitions and of the official records of parliament reveals that there were a number of issues on which women consistently pressed for changes in the law and its administration, and where the Commons and the Crown either championed or refused to support reform. Such is the concentration of petitions on the subjects of dower and rape that these may justifiably be termed ‘women’s issues’ in the medieval Parliament.

The Lordship Of England written by Scott L. Waugh and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-14 with History categories.

This thorough examination of the feudal powers of English kings in the thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries is the only study to analyze the actual pattern of royal grants and the grantees' use of their rights, and to place them in the social context of marriage, kinship, and landholding within the English elite. The royal rights, known as feudal incidents, included custody of a tenant's lands when he died leaving minor heirs, the arrangement of the heir's marriage, and consent to the widow's remarriage. Scott Waugh shows how the king exercised those rights and how his use of feudal incidents affected his relations with the tenants-in-chief. He concludes that royal lordship was of fundamental importance in reinforcing the power and prestige of the monarchy and in offering the king a valuable source of patronage. English kings, therefore, devoted considerable effort to defining and institutionalizing their feudal authority in the thirteenth century. It is also clear that families living under royal lordship were profoundly concerned about these rights, especially since marriage was of such critical importance in providing for the smooth transfer of lands from one generation to another. Given the hazards of life in the Middle Ages, inheritance by minors was a frequent occurrence, and the king's distribution of feudal incidents was therefore a delicate political problem. It raised issues not only about royal finances and favoritism but also about the fate of families. Originally published in 1988. Law reports are one of the main sources from which legal history is written. They record what lawyers and judges said in court in legal argument arising out of the facts of particular caes and how the judges decided the outcome of those cases. They thus provide vital evidence for what the lawyers and judges of the past believed to be the law of their day. They also demonstrate the ability of those lawyers and judges to shape and develop law through argument and decision-making in individual cases. 'Law Reporting in Britain' has a clear theme - the history and development of law reporting in Britain.

The history of Parliament is the history of the United Kingdom itself. It has a cast of thousands. Some were ambitious, visionary and altruistic. Others were hot-headed, violent and self-serving. Few were unambiguously noble. Yet their rowdy confrontations, their campaigning zeal and their unstable alliances framed our nation. This first of two volumes takes us on a 500-year journey from Parliament's earliest days in the thirteenth century through the turbulent years of the Wars of the Roses and the upheavals of the Civil Wars, and up to 1801, when Parliament – and the United Kingdom, embracing Scotland and Ireland – emerged in a modern form. Chris Bryant tells this epic tale through the lives of the myriad MPs, lords and bishops who passed through Parliament. It is the vivid, colourful biography of a cast of characters whose passions and obsessions, strengths and weaknesses laid the foundations of modern democracy.

The Reign Of Edward Ii written by Gwilym Dodd and has been published by Boydell & Brewer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with History categories.

A new review of the most significant issues of Edward II's reign. Edward II presided over a turbulent and politically charged period of English history, but to date he has been relatively neglected in comparison to other fourteenth and fifteenth-century kings. This book offers a significant re-appraisal of a much maligned monarch and his historical importance, making use of the latest empirical research and revisionist theories, and concentrating on people and personalities, perceptions and expectations, rather than dry constitutional analysis. Papers consider both the institutional and the personal facets of Edward II's life and rule: his sexual reputation, the royal court, the role of the king's household knights, the nature of law and parliament in the reign, and England's relations with Ireland and Europe. Contributors: J.S. HAMILTON, W.M. ORMROD, IAN MORTIMER, MICHAEL PRESTWICH, ALISTAIR TEBBIT, W.R. CHILDS, PAUL DRYBURGH, ANTHONY MUSSON, GWILYM DODD, ALISON MARSHALL, MARTYN LAWRENCE, SEYMOUR PHILLIPS.

A. R. Myers's research in the history of late medieval England spanned more than forty years. Throughout his academic career 15th-century England, especially the documentary remnants of its administration, held his attention consistently though not exclusively. The relevant studies, fruits of his research in this field which were originally published in periodicals published over five decades, have here been brought together. As a corpus they provide a collection of important documents related to the crown, the royal household and parliament. Complete with a critical introduction by R. B. Dobson, this is the essential collection of the works of an influential historian of early modern England.

Office Of Ambassador written by Donald E. Queller and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-03-14 with History categories.

The evolution of the office of the ambassador from the primitive messenger (nuncius) through the Roman law procurator to the nearly modern resident ambassador is traced in this study of the ambassador of representative institutions to the relations among states in the Middle Ages. The book makes use of official diplomatic documents, many unpublished, and most of them drawn from archives in Venice, England, and Flanders, reflecting the diplomatic activities of a great Italian city-state, a national monarchy, and a powerful feudal county. Chronicles have been used as supplementary sources, especially when the chronicler was an experienced diplomat, such as Villehardouin or Commines. Originally published in 1967.
