A collection of ideas from David Payton and his two sons, Orrin Lynn Tolliver III, and David C. Tolliver. A father and sons' collaboration of poetry, spoken word and other concepts for future books and movies. There are a few words of vulgarity within. For the discriminate reader. Young minds exhaling their inner thoughts, and a very proud father. This is a "rough" so it is not error free. The works are raw, and a compilation of material from over the past two or three years.

One prompt, thirteen stories . . . Moments in Space & Time, the 2019 edition of the Rough Writers Anthology, is the second book published by the Rough Writers Toastmasters of Long Beach, California. All authors are members of the club and used the same writing prompt as inspiration for their work. The prompt inspired a diversity of stories reflective of the diversity of the club's members. From science fiction to social commentary, the range of stories is as astounding as the common threads that run through the entire book.Rough Writers has adopted and adapted the Toastmasters curriculum to not only enable writers to develop their public speaking skills but also to empower speakers to hone their craft as writers. The program gives members a space to grow their communication and leadership skills as both speakers and writers. This book is a result of their collaborative work.

Most secrets begin with "Don't Tell," but members of Rough Writers, a Toastmasters writing club in Long Beach, are telling it all in their 2021 Anthology of short stories. The challenge was simply to develop a character that has a secret, and the authors created a diverse array of stories. The Rough Writers developed intriguing characters, dramatic plots, memorable settings, and multiple surprises based on the theme of a secret. Coping with unwanted realities certainly can alter a life and our authors developed characters changed by unusual circumstances and information. The stories show how the course of a life can be changed forever and be affected by emotional trauma or by jubilation. Explore the depth and impact of a secret and become lost in the world of characters invented by the creative storytellers of Rough Writers and Don't Tell the secrets in each short story.

As the United States struggled to absorb a massive influx of ethnically diverse immigrants at the turn of the twentieth century, the question of who and what an American is took on urgent intensity. It seemed more critical than ever to establish a definition by which Americanness could be established, transmitted, maintained, and judged. Americans of all stripes sought to articulate and enforce their visions of the nation’s past, present, and future; central to these attempts was President Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt fully recognized the narrative component of American identity, and he called upon authors of diverse European backgrounds including Israel Zangwill, Jacob Riis, Elizabeth Stern, and Finley Peter Dunne to promote the nation in popular written form. With the swell and shift in immigration, he realized that a more encompassing national literature was needed to “express and guide the soul of the nation.” Rough Writing examines the surprising place and implications of the immigrant and of ethnic writing in Roosevelt’s America and American literature.
