The most popular painter of his day, yet an artist whose reputation has fluctuated among art scholars and critics of the succeeding centuries, Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) is chiefly remembered today for his large canvases of sensual gardens, religious scenes, and voluptuous "Rubenesque" women. In Oppenheimer's account of his life, Rubens emerges not only as a talented painter but also as an intellectual with a unique conception of beauty that proved very influential and ahead of his time. Oppenheimer explores Rubens' ideas as he tells the story of his life, which included years as a diplomat, and illuminates his response to the humanism of the Renaissance in which he lived.

Michelangelo regarded portraiture as a trivial genre, and Peter Paul Rubens did not instantly develop a preference for it either. Yet Rubens succeeded, as none other, in endowing his portraits with an almost palpable sense of immediacy, and was to become one of the greatest portraitists of all time. His most beautiful and surprising portraits are those of his immediate family. These intimate pictures were not intended for public display and are therefore considerably freer and more experimental than the likenesses he painted of influential patrons. Nothing about these private images seems idealized. They are uncommonly honest and veracious and at the same time expressive of great tenderness. While the hundreds of letters he wrote reveal very little about his emotional life, Rubens s portraits of family members testify in a special way to the affection he felt for his first and second wives, his brother and his children.

Rubens Portraits Of Identified Sitters Painted In Antwerp written by Hans Vlieghe and has been published by Harvey Miller Pub this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1987 with Art categories.

This volume is the second in the series devoted to portraits and in this volume is confined to portraits painted in Antwerp, cataloguing those in which the sitters are identified. Dr. Vlieghe examines the specific stylistic evolution of Rubens as a portrait painter, and shows how clearly the portraits reflect the general development of the painter's style. Of particular interest is the way in which Rubens merged the monumental sense of form and High-Renaissance devices that he had learnt in Italy with the traditions of style and iconography current in the Southern Netherlands. Especial emphasis is laid on the emblematic character of Rubens's portraits, especially those of his own family.
