Het oeuvre van Rubens, dat bestaat uit meer dan 1400 schilderijen en schetsen, is overweldigend. In Rubens schetst kunsthistoricus Nils Büttner het leven van de Vlaams-Nederlandse schilder en presenteert hij diens werk in al zijn diversiteit. Aan de hand van beelden en biografische context geeft Büttner inzicht in de maatschappelijke positie van Rubens, vanaf zijn beginjaren in Italië tot aan zijn tijd aan de Europese hoven, en hoe die zijn werk op meerdere fronten beïnvloedde. Rubens verkeerde in dezelfde kringen als de rijken, machtigen en intellectuelen van zijn tijd, maar dat was niet altijd zo geweest.
