Rudolf Bultmann verstand es, historische Rekonstruktion und gegenwartsbezogene Interpretation des Neuen Testaments virtuos miteinander zu verbinden. Selbst ein Meister der historischen Kritik, suchte er die Krise des Historismus mit dem hermeneutischen Konzept der existentialen Interpretation zu überwinden. Mit seinem umstrittenen Entmythologisierungsprogramm brachte er den Wahrheitsanspruch des christlichen Glaubens im neuzeitlichen Kontext zur Geltung. Über ein halbes Jahrhundert dominierte Bultmann den Forschungsdiskurs der neutestamentlichen Wissenschaft. Heinrich Schlier, Günther Bornkamm, Ernst Fuchs und Ernst Käsemann rühmten das pädagogische Charisma des akademischen Lehrers, der seine Schüler zu unbedingter Wahrhaftigkeit und selbständigem Denken anzuleiten bestrebt war. Der Denker eines theologisch begründeten Individualismus wußte viel über den Sinn lebendiger Gemeinschaft zu sagen. Jeglichem verordneten Kollektivismus hingegen widersprach er entschieden - gerade auch im Dritten Reich. Seine theologische Existenz vollzog sich nicht zufällig im Austausch mit anderen Theologen wie Karl Barth, Friedrich Gogarten, Hans von Soden und Ernst Lohmeyer sowie im interdisziplinären Dialog mit Martin Heidegger, Erich Frank, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Hans Jonas und Gerhard Krüger, Paul Friedländer, Max Kommerell und Erich Auerbach. Zu Bultmanns 125. Geburtstag am 20. August 2009 erscheint die vorliegende Biographie, die seinen Lebens- und Denkweg nachzeichnet. Konrad Hammann verortet das Leben und Werk Bultmanns in seiner Zeit, in den theologischen und interdisziplinären Diskursen sowie den politischen Konflikten der Epoche.

Ernst Kasemann famously claimed that apocalyptic is the mother of Christian theology. J. Louis Martyn's radical interpretation of the overarching significance of apocalyptic in Paul's theology has pushed Kasemann's claim further and deeper. Still, despite the recognition that apocalyptic is at the core of New Testament and Pauline theology, modern theology has often dismissed, domesticated, or demythologized early Christian apocalyptic. A renewed interest in taking apocalyptic seriously is one of the most exciting developments in recent theology. The essays in this volume, taking their point of departure from the work of Martyn (and Kasemann), wrestle critically with the promise (and possible peril) of the apocalyptic transformation of Christian theology.
