Es ist dies eine mitreißende Fluchtgeschichte, die uns in das traditionsträchtige Ostpreußen mit den berühmten Pferdezüchtern und den scheinbar endlosen Kornfeldern führt. Hier wächst Jan auf dem elterlichen Gestüt in gutbürgerlichen Verhältnissen auf und entdeckt mit seinem Freund Christian und Jenny, Tochter der Haushälterin, das Leben in allen Facetten. Jan und Christian mögen sich und machen gemeinsam ihre ersten sexuellen Erfahrungen. Christian wird schließlich zur Hitlerjugend eingezogen, damit kommt auch der Krieg nach Ostpreußen. Es beginnt für sie die schmerzliche Zeit der Trennung. Erst jetzt bemerkt Jan seine Liebe zu Christian, hat aber nicht den Mut, sich zu ihr zu bekennen. Als die russischen Soldaten auch nach Stallupönen einfallen, begeben sich Jan, Jenny, ihre Mutter Hanna und Kossmann, der alte Knecht, im Treck auf die Flucht heim ins Reich. Sie erleben das ganze Elend des Krieges mit Luftangriffen, Flucht über das vereiste und brüchige Haff, Vergewaltigungen und viel Hunger und Not. Als der polnische Zwangsarbeiter Adam zu ihnen stößt, erfährt Jan vom Schicksal seiner Eltern und schließt seine Vergangenheit ab. Von nun an blickt er noch nach vorn mit dem einzigen Ziel, zu überleben. Dabei wird die Liebe zwischen Jan und Adam die tragende Kraft. Als sie schließlich im Reich ankommen, werden sie zum Spielball vernichtender Intrigen. Es ist ein spannender Roman voller überraschender Momente, in dem auch die Erotik nicht zu kurz kommt.
