This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Workshop on Rules and Rule Markup Languages for the Semantic Web, RuleML 2004, held in Hiroshima, Japan, in November 2004, together with ISWC 2004. The 11 revised full papers presented together with 2 invited papers and 5 tool presentation abstracts were carefully reviewed and selected from 25 submissions. Among the topics addressed are nonmonotonic rule systems, rule learning for feature extraction, logic reasoners for the Semantic Web, deductive RDF rule languages, description logic programs, defeasible description logics, conceptual logic programs, OWL inferencing, and Semantic Web reasoning.

RuleML 2003 was the second international workshop on rules and rule markup languages for the Semantic Web, held in conjunction with the International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC). The aim of the RuleML workshop series is to stimulate research on all issues related to web rule languages and to provide an annual forum for presenting and discussing new research results. The Semantic Web is a major world-wide endeavor to advance the Web by enriching its multimedia document content with propositional information that can be processed by inference-enabled Web applications. Rules and rule markup languages, such as RuleML, will play an important role in the success of the Semantic Web. Rules will act as a means to draw inferences, to express constraints, tospecifypoliciesforreactingtoevents, totransformdata, etc.Rule markup languages will allow us to enrich Web ontologies by adding de?nitions of derived concepts, to publish rules on the Web, to exchange rules between di?erent systems and tools, etc. RuleML 2003 built on the success of RuleML 2002, which was held in c- junction with ISWC 2002, Sardinia, Italy. The proceedings of RuleML 2002 can be found at http://www.ceur-ws.org/Vol-60/. Special highlights of the RuleML 2003 workshop were the two invited pres- tationsgivenbyPeterChenon“Rules,XML,andtheERModel”andbyHarold Boley on “Object-Oriented RuleML: User-Level Roles, URI-Grounded Clauses, and Order-Sorted Terms”. This proceedings volume also contains an invited - per by Francois ̧ Bry and Sebastian Scha?ert on “An Entailment Relation for Reasoning on the Web”.

This book goes to great depth concerning the fast growing topic of technologies and approaches of fuzzy logic in the Semantic Web. The topics of this book include fuzzy description logics and fuzzy ontologies, queries of fuzzy description logics and fuzzy ontology knowledge bases, extraction of fuzzy description logics and ontologies from fuzzy data models, storage of fuzzy ontology knowledge bases in fuzzy databases, fuzzy Semantic Web ontology mapping, and fuzzy rules and their interchange in the Semantic Web. The book aims to provide a single record of current research in the fuzzy knowledge representation and reasoning for the Semantic Web. The objective of the book is to provide the state of the art information to researchers, practitioners and graduate students of the Web intelligence and at the same time serve the knowledge and data engineering professional faced with non-traditional applications that make the application of conventional approaches difficult or impossible.

The Semantic Web is a vision – the idea of having data on the Web defined and linked in such a way that it can be used by machines not just for display purposes but for automation, integration and reuse of data across various applications. However, there is a widespread misconception that the Semantic Web is a rehash of existing AI and database work. Kashyap, Bussler, and Moran dispel this notion by presenting the multi-disciplinary technological underpinnings such as machine learning, information retrieval, service-oriented architectures, and grid computing. Thus they combine the informational and computational aspects needed to realize the full potential of the Semantic Web vision.

The Web is a globalinformationspace consistingoflinked documents andlinked data. As the Web continues to grow and new technologies, modes of interaction, and applications are being developed, the task of the Semantic Web is to unlock the power of information available on the Web into a common semantic inf- mation space and to make it available for sharing and processing by automated tools as well as by people. Right now, the publication of large datasets on the Web, the opening of data access interfaces, and the encoding of the semantics of the data extend the current human-centric Web. Now, the Semantic Web c- munity is tackling the challenges of how to create and manage Semantic Web content, how to make Semantic Web applications robust and scalable, and how to organize and integrate information from di?erent sources for novel uses. To foster the exchange of ideas and collaboration, the International Semantic Web Conference brings together researchers and practitioners in relevant disciplines such as arti?cial intelligence, databases, social networks, distributed computing, Web engineering, information systems, natural language processing, soft c- puting, and human–computer interaction. This volume contains the main proceedings of ISWC 2008, which we are - cited to o?er to the growing community of researchers and practitioners of the Semantic Web. We got a tremendous response to our call for research papers from a truly international community of researchers and practitioners from 41 countries submitting 261 papers. Each paper receivedan averageof 3.
