A strong rural arts project should be collaborative. Collaborative projects accommodate diverse needs and agendas, develop non-school project advocates, are sustained by and rely on several sources, and strengthen communities. Because local artists are accessible, have a special commitment to improving education in their communities, and understand community traditions, they should be involved in collaborative art endeavors. This handbook presents models and suggestions for creating collaborative local art education programs. The book's nine chapters each suggest a stage in the creative process. Guide Sheets throughout, summarize useful information. Chapter 1 lays out the organization of the book and provides a brief word glossary. Chapter 2 gives practical suggestions, with examples, about gathering ideas and people together. Chapter 3 indicates a number of ways to gather personal and institutional support and build a project network. Chapter 4 offers suggestions for an effective and inclusive process for planning and management. Chapter 5 explains that outcomes define what will happen as a result of the project. Some outcomes are clearly measurable, others will be harder to assess. Both types are important. Chapter 6 discusses budgeting and financing. Chapter 7 describes nine management procedures which can ensure a "Positive Experience." Chapter 8 deals with the ongoing processes of project management. Chapter 9 focuses on approaches to sharing the success of the project with students, parents, project planners, community members, and the general public. Each chapter concludes with brief recommendations for reading the chapter topic in greater detail. (MM)

This book describes the process and results of a 5 year arts initiative, Artists in Minnesota Schools and Communities (AMSC). Based on the premise that rural communities hold an undervalued wealth of artistic and cultural resources rarely tapped by schools, the project piloted a variety of models for integrating art in the educational experiences of students and community members. This document organizes the report of AMSC efforts into five parts. Part 1 introduces the founders and philosophic rationale for this initiative. Part 2 lays out the concepts and operations for selection, support, and evaluation of the 13 pilot sites. The selection sites provide a range of themes and approaches to project implementation. Part 3 presents the model projects by their themes."Artist/Teacher Collaborations" offers cooperative learning situations. "What We Cherish Here" defines and commemorates the values and uniqueness of community. "Cultural Sharing" focuses of pluralistic communities. "Interdisciplinary Education" and "Ways of Sharing Art" look at art roles in the larger educational and community arena. And "Healing Dreams" (in a unique school setting) reports on work in a hospice setting. Part 4 identifies project findings: (1) generalization of rural communities is inappropriate; (2) local artist participation is important to the community's ability to develop successful and lasting art education programs; (3) collaboration, working together toward a common goal; (4) inclusion, the incorporation of many voices, are key factors in planning and developing successful art education programs; (5) the level of local autonomy and degree of AMSC involvement must vary from site to site; and (6) continuation was identified as an area needing more developed strategies for support of future projects. Part 5: "Recommendations for the Future," completes the report. Appendixes are: "Table One: Summary of Project Information"; "Table Two: Summary of Project Budget Information"; "Map of Model Project Sites"; and a 50-item bibliography. (MM)

This zine contains a colletion of photographs and written reflections made by the students at Bellaire High School, who participated in a year-long photography project through the Rural Arts Collaborative. Bellaire, Ohio is a vilage of 4000 that sits along the Ohio River in Appalachia. While Bellaire is often defined by its robust history and post-industrial predicament, these photographs and statements lean towards the personal. Thirteen student photographers contributed to this body of work by documenting their lives and interests, using either cell phones and/or point-and-shoot cameras. The students were introduced to a variety of photographic work throughout the 2018-2019 academic year. However, the zine concept was very much influenced by the LBM Dispatch series from renowned photographer, Alec Soth...The purpose of the zine is not advertorial, rather it intends to give each student a place to share a personal point of view...The goal of the class was to use photography as a vehicle for exploration, dialogue, and creativity. We hope the project brought life-long lessons: By engaging in the artistic process, one may experience the beauty inherent in mystery, the reward of risk-taking, and the fruits of perseverance.
