Excerpt from Rural Sociology It will be noted that the book is divided into parts, and these parts into chapters. It is true that there is a great amount of overlapping of the material from one part to another; and that certain sections might as well have been placed in one part as in another. However, the division into parts should be useful, as it represents a rather natural subdivision of the material. Excerpt from Introduction to Rural Sociology The practical value of modern attempts to reduce the laws of social organization to a scientific basis has been so thor oughly demonstrated that it no longer needs discussion. Inter est in problems of social organization and effort to understand and solve them have continued to increase as recognition of the value of such effort has grown. Such applied problems as those of the causes and relief of poverty, the adjustment of labor conditions, the equitable distribution of wealth, the social control of the growth of cities and the administration of ai fairs oi state in the larger units, have long received attention. The more recent interest in problems of rural and village life is but an expression of the broadening social point of view, and of the recognition of the fact that human society is, so far as the modern world is concerned, a unity, and that an under standing of rural problems is not only necessary for the sake of the country community but is also necessary as a basis for the explanation of many urban social problems. Excerpt from Readings in Rural Sociology The rapid introduction during the past ten years of courses in rural sociology in universities, colleges, normal schools and other institutions engaged in the preparation of young men and women for the rural field has prepared the way for a book of readings in this subject that may be used as a text for an introductory course. Much of the material included in this book has been used with college classes in this institution and with classes of teachers in normal schools and in university summer courses. In the selection of the material it has seemed best to draw upon the writings of men and women whose long experience or professional standing entitles them to speak with some degree of authority. Excerpt from Constructive Rural Sociology Rural conditions are attracting widespread attention. Numerous articles and volumes dealing with country-life matters have appeared during the past few years. While many of the books issued are exceedingly useful hardly any of them could be considered a rural sociology. To consider together the various phases of the life of the rural com munity and so to organise and present them that they shall convey a knowledge and appreciation of the problems of country life is surely a useful undertaking. The present modest volume is an attempt to do this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Brief Course in Rural Economics and Rural Sociology The cordial reception given the first edition of this little book has made a second edition necessary. Some changes, which in the light of class room use seemed advisable have been made. Many topics have been treated more fully, a few that were not in the first edition have been included, and a few others have been omitted entirely. A course of study adapted to eighth grade pupils in rural schools has been added. In making use of this course of study in a rural school it is suggested that the topics be taken up in connection with the work in history, civics, geography, etc. This book is intended as an introduction to the study of rural economics and rural sociology. It has been prepared to meet the needs of rural teachers and pupils in rural schools. In no sense is it a scientific treatise. It will have served its purpose if it leads its readers to a further study of the great movements making for the betterment of country life. Excerpt from The Rural Community, Ancient and Modern Rural social life in the final analysis always reduces to the problem of locality, neighborhood, community. There is no escaping this fact. And there is no successful study, understanding, or redirection in this field save it be in these terms. To be sure, community is said to be wanting in the country; and there is much truth in the statement. But the fact of its absence does not lessen its importance nor justify any neglect of its consideration. On the contrary, it would seem to offer a challenge to find out just its extent, to determine its nature, to rediscover its forces, and to organize its interests in every locality. For in truth the ultimate goal of all efforts toward rural social uplift is the development of the social unities, or, in other words, the achievement of community. About what nuclei or centres the unifying forces of the country are playing and are tending to crystallize is the foremost question involved in the rural problem. It is contended by some that the villages, towns, and small cities form natural centres and that they are to be the focal points of communization for the farm districts. This claim is not without justification, for it is at once apparent to the observer that country life in a consider able measure does revolve about such places. As evidence that the present development is largely if not altogether favorable to the town-centring process, attention is called to the changes being effected by good roads, more adequate and rapid means of transportation, and facilities for quicker communication. Outstanding among these changes is the resulting approachment between town and country along the lines of a closer affiliation of church, school, family, lodge, and club life, as well as in more intimate business relations. Excerpt from Chapters in Rural Progress This book does not offer a complete analysis of the rural problem; but attempts, in general, to present some of the more significant phases of that problem, and, in particular, to describe some of the agencies at work in solving it. Several of the chapters were originally magazine articles, and, though all have been revised and in some cases entirely rewritten, they have the limitations of such articles. Other chapters consist of more formal addresses. Necessarily there Will be found some lack of uniformity in style and in method of presentation, and occasional duplication of argument or statement.
