Sie arbeitet dabei die Facetten einer spezifischen Tradition in der deutschen und russischen Geistesgeschichte heraus. Deren Vertreter redeten und schrieben mit missionarischem Eifer das Ende Europas herbei und stilisierten „ihr“ Volk zum Erlöser einer vermeintlich todkranken europäischen Kultur. Pocais kompakte, pointiert verfasste Studie trägt auch zum Verständnis der ideologischen Grundlagen der jüngsten russischen Politik bei. So entstammen Vladimir Putins Projekt einer Eurasischen Union ebenso wie seine Rhetorik von der überlegenen russischen Kultur dem Instrumentarium einer antiwestlichen Zivilisationskritik, deren Wurzeln bis ins frühe 19. Jahrhundert zurückreichen und die in Oswald Spengler und Nikolaj Berdjaev zwei wirkmächtige Agitatoren gefunden hatte. Das Buch ist für all diejenigen ein besonderer Gewinn, denen an der Dechiffrierung und Aufdeckung jener Stereotypien und Topoi gelegen ist, die so manche Diskussion zum deutsch-russischen oder russisch-europäischen Verhältnis bis heute prägen.

This book traces transformations in German views of Russia in the first half of the twentieth century, leading up to the disastrous German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. Casteel shows how Russia figured in the imperial visions and utopian desires of a variety of Germans, including scholars, journalists, travel writers, government and military officials, as well as nationalist activists. He illuminates the ambiguous position that Russia occupied in Germans' global imaginary as both an imperial rival and an object of German power. During the interwar years in particular, Russia, now under Soviet rule, became a site onto which Germans projected their imperial ambitions and expectations for the future, as well as their worst anxieties about modernity. Casteel shows how the Nazis drew on this cultural repertoire to construct their own devastating vision of racial imperialism.

The opening up, and subsequent tearing down, of the Berlin Wall in 1989 effectively ended a historically unique period for Europe that had drastically changed its face over a period of fifty years and redefined, in all sorts of ways, what was meant by East and West. For Germany in particular this radical change meant much more than unification of the divided country, although initially this process seemed to consume all of the country's energies and emotions. While the period of the Cold War saw the emergence of a Federal Republic distinctly Western in orientation, the coming down of the Iron Curtain meant that Germany's relationship with its traditional neighbours to the East and the South-East, which had been essentially frozen or redefined in different ways for the two German states by the Cold War, had to be rediscovered. This volume, which brings together scholars in German Studies from the United States, Germany and other European countries, examines the history of the relationship between Germany and Eastern Europe and the opportunities presented by the changes of the 1990's, drawing particular attention to the interaction between the willingness of German and its Eastern neighbours to work for political and economic inte-gration, on the one hand, and the cultural and social problems that stem from old prejudices and unresolved disputes left over from the Second World War, on the other.
