"Russia in 1916" by Stephen Graham The early 20th century was a pivotal time for Russia. Political changes were taking hold and many people's ways of life were uncertain. Graham shows what it was like to be in this important area during this time. He offers an interesting perspective as a non-Russian witnessing and living through the new changes in the country.

This volume offers a comprehensive and original analysis and reconceptualisation of the compendium of struggles that wracked the collapsing Tsarist empire and the emergent USSR, profoundly affecting the history of the twentieth century. Indeed, the reverberations of those decade-long wars echo to the present day - not despite, but because of the collapse of the Soviet Union, which re-opened many old wounds, from the Baltic to the Caucasus. Contemporary memorialising and 'de-memorialising' of these wars, therefore form part of the book's focus, but at its heart lie the struggles between various Russian political and military forces which sought to inherit and preserve, or even expand, the territory of the tsars, overlain with examinations of the attempts of many non-Russian national and religious groups to divide the former empire. The reasons why some of the latter were successful (Poland and Finland, for example), while others (Ukraine, Georgia and the Muslim Basmachi) were not, are as much the author's concern as are explanations as to why the chief victors of the 'Russian' Civil Wars were the Bolsheviks. Tellingly, the work begins and ends with battles in Central Asia - a theatre of the 'Russian' Civil Wars that was closer to Mumbai than it was to Moscow.

Olga Karnovich, born in 1865, married Erich Gerhard von Pistolkors, an aide-de-camp to Grand Duke Vladimir, brother of Tsar Alexander III, in 1884, and they had four children. An affair with Grand Duke Paul, a widower and brother of the Tsar and Vladimir, resulted in the birth of another son, also named Vladimir. After her divorce from Pistolkors, she and Paul defied Tsar Nicholas II, and fled Russia to marry in Italy. They settled in Paris for several years where she gave birth to two more daughters, and was granted the title of Countess of Hohenfelsen by the Prince Regent of Bavaria. When they returned to Russia, Paul was allowed to serve with the army in the First World War, and the Tsar created the title of Princess Paley for her and their children. During the revolution, her husband and youngest son were captured and killed by the Bolsheviks. She and her daughters escaped to Finland and then returned to Paris, where she died in 1929.'Memories of Russia 1916-1919' was published in 1924, a poignant, often harrowing account of the 'last happy days' before the disintegration of the empire, and the Tsar's abdication. She records in stark detail the actions of the revolutionary officials, the increasing humiliation and cruelty that she and her husband, who was already in poor health, suffered under the new order, the 'reign of blackguardism' as they gradually requisitioned or destroyed her property and that of the other Romanovs, and how they responded to each gesture of brutality with dignity during 'the dreadful calvary of 1918'. It is a moving document by one who survived, while so many of those closest to her did not.

The Russian Revolution and Civil War in the years 1917 to 1921 is one of the most widely studied periods in history. It is also somewhat inevitably one that has generated a huge flow of literature in the decades that have passed since the events themselves. However, until now, historians of the revolution have had no dedicated bibliography of the period and little claim to bibliographical control over the literature. The Russian Revolution and Civil War, 1917-1921offers for the first time a comprehensive bibliographical guide to this crucial and fascinating period of history. The Bibliography focuses on the key years of 1917 to 1921, starting with the February Revolution of 1917 and concluding with the 10th Party Congress of March 1921, and covers all the key events of the intervening years. As such it identifies these crucial years as something more than simply the creation of a communist state.

Excerpt from Russia From the American Embassy: April, 1916 November, 1918 My commission as Ambassador to Russia was dated March 9th, 1916. As I was so long in regaining my health and strength after leaving Russia, I offered to resign the Ambassadorship three or more times, but each time the Secretary of State or the Acting Secretary dissuaded me from presenting my resignation. I have drawn no salary as Ambassador since the 26th of April, 1919, but since then I have held myself subject to being sent back to Russia as American Ambassador in the event a stable government was established there. At no time was there any likelihood of our recognizing the Bolshevik Soviet Government. My resignation as Ambassador to Russia was presented on the 3rd of March, 1921, but I have not had advice of its acceptance up to the present writing. It will be seen, therefore, that my services have covered five years. During this period I was credited to the Monarchy of Russia thirteen months. I represented the United States with the Provisional Government of Russia for eight months. I remained in Russia from the inception of Bolshevik usurpation and until within five days of the Armistice, when a surgical operation necessitated removal to a hospital in London. Upon leaving the hospital I went by direction of the Secretary of State to Paris, to be present at the meeting of the Peace Conference in February, 1919. My urgent recommendation that I be sent back to Petrograd was under consideration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
