This book on the security context in the Black Sea region is a timely endeavour and substantive contribution to understanding the state of play in the region and its linkages to the rest of the world. With contributions from analysts from Europe, the United States, Russia, Ukraine and Turkey, the book provides a holistic perspective. Post-Cold War developments have increased interest in the Black Sea region and the role of the regional and extra-regional actors in its security issues: this volume examines the position of the United States; NATO’s involvement; the EU’s engagement; Russia and Turkey’s aspirations alongside the policies of the other states in the region as they seek a role for themselves. It illustrates and investigates key concerns such as security, energy and energy security, regionalism and good governance; and questions why a cooperative security framework (or other regional schemes which could accommodate the needs of all stakeholders) has to date never become a reality. This book adds to the growing body of research on the region, presenting the facts of the current situation and asking what can be done in the Black Sea region for it to survive given its precarious security environment. This book was published as a special issue of Southeast European and Black Sea Studies.

This book examines the maritime capabilities and assets of each of the six littoral Black Sea states and also considers the implications of the distribution of maritime power on both regional and international security. In this publication possible ways to promote security cooperation in the Wider Black Sea Area are being addressed. The area holds major importance for Euro-Atlantic security. Strategically located at the crossroads of Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia, the region, after the dual NATO-EU enlargement in 2004-2007, became part of the periphery of the common Euro-Atlantic security system, with critical value for European energy security and the war on terrorism. The region faces a variety of security challenges, including regional conflicts, ethnic strife, terrorism, and powerful organized crime, while many of the countries have weak institutions, turbulent political systems, unstable economies and lack of democracy. In addition, the traffic of drugs to the West, the steady stream of militancy from the Middle East, and the energy lines from the oil and gas-rich regions of the East to an energy-hungry Europe gradually define the Wider Black Sea Area as a region urgently requiring political attention and investment in its security. This publication is intended to provide fresh ideas on the possible areas of security cooperation, even as the authors agreed that comprehensive, far-reaching policies are hard to attain in the near future.

This book examines the geopolitical shifts triggered by Russia's military aggression against Ukraine from February 2022 onwards. This conflict has catalyzed unprecedented transformations in the Black Sea region's security landscape, reshaping the foundations of international relations. Presenting various case studies on key players such Russia, Ukraine, the USA, Turkey, the European Union, and NATO, the book presents a comprehensive analysis of the multifaceted impacts stemming from the conflict, focusing on three critical dimensions: military, economic, and human security. The contributions examine whether and how the conflict has not only magnified security challenges but also spurred resistance by Ukrainian forces and society. It also examines the impact of comprehensive economic sanctions and Western military and financial assistance to Ukraine on Russia's military capabilities and regional balance of power. The book sheds new light on the intricate interplay between state actors, multilateral institutions, and emerging regional orders. By dissecting the impact on governance models, rule of law, and human security, the book illuminates the far-reaching consequences of the conflict beyond military dynamics. With a keen focus on the emergent European security order, the book underscores the need for novel strategies to address the evolving security complexities in the Black Sea region. This book is a must-read for those seeking insights into the changing face of European security and the emergence of a new geopolitical order.

The Nato Russia Partnership written by Stephen Blank and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Security, International categories.

Four years after the NATO-Russia Council came into being, it represents a picture in ambivalence and incomplete realization of partnership. This monograph focuses on the Russian side of this growing estrangement. It finds the Russian roots of this ambivalence or alienation in the increasingly visible manifestations of an autocratic and neo-imperial Russian state and foreign and defense policy. These strong trends in Russian policy inhibit the formation of a genuine security partnership that can provide for Eurasian security in the face of multiple contemporary threats. Indeed, it is debatable whether Russia really wants a comprehensive partnership with NATO. The author examines Russia's perspectives in this relationship and this growing estrangement between the West and Russia, tracing it to trends in Russian domestic, defense, and foreign policies.
