The book of Ruth is the story of a young woman who chooses to follow an older one, her mother-in-law Naomi, forsaking her own mother's house. It is the story of how two women, from different places, backgrounds, religions, come together and forged a covenant relationship between themselves and God. It is not biology, gender, race, religion or culture that binds them together, it is God. Together, these two women embarked on a journey of discipleship and destiny; of spiritual mothering and devoted spiritual daughter; of mentoring and healing that would forever transform and changed their lives. It is the true story of me, an African American woman from Mississippi, and a young Irish American woman from Maine, which crosses over every natural man-made barrier into the spiritual realm where God's unconditional love binds the two of us in a true covenant relationship - like the biblical Ruth and Naomi. In Ruth Chapter One we learn that Naomi and her husband Elimelech, and her two sons Mahlon and Kilion, were Ephrathites from Bethlehem, Judah. They had fled to Moab because there was a great famine in the land. Years later the famine was over and there was food now available in Judah. I have personally found that God will allow you to believe whatever you want to get you to the place of destiny. Naomi believed it was the famine that brought her to Moab; but, that was the earthly reason only. God's divine destiny for Ruth and Naomi, demanded that Naomi go the land of Moab for that divine appointment to meet Ruth and marry one of Ruth's sons; and after being widowed, to return ten years later to Judah for Ruth's and Naomi's divine destination, meeting and marrying Boaz, and becoming a member of the lineage of Jesus Christ. Both women did not see what God had planned as they traveled the road to Moab. Their physical circumstances looked pretty dreary - two widowed women returning to a land without hope. In order for this covenant relationship to work and for both women to meet her destiny, the younger woman had to submit to the older woman as a daughter submits to her mother. Back then this meant Ruth listened and following the guidance and instructions of Naomi; in modern day this concept is foreign to most young women, just like seeking God is also a foreign concept with most young women today. Ruth and Amanda both sought to know the "God" of their adopted mothers. Amanda came with a desire to know God and had been crying out and praying for Him to save her for over a year when we met. Like with all of us who listen, the Holy Spirit was drawing her to know her Maker, and she was answering Him on her way to her divine destination and appointment.

Hollies' latest offering is a Bible study on the covenant that Ruth made to Naomi--what she refers to as "sister friends"--as they left Moab on their way to Jerusalem. What makes this so unique is that Hollies creatively retells the story using the liturgical year as her backdrop. The liturgical seasons of Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Ash Wednesday, Lent, Easter, the Easter season, Pentecost, and Ordinary times are used. On Their Way to Wonderful is an exploration of multicultural marriage (Ruth and Boaz) as well as diversity and racism in Scripture (Ruth, a Moabite who God allows to enter the forbidden Jewish blood line). Women will relate to this resource as it touches on issues that impact their lives, such as making critical decisions, handling relationships, and renewal of the self and soul. Includes study questions and space for journaling.

This book investigates the feminine traditions of the Hebrew Bible in a readable manner, pertinent to contemporary times. It is unique in its focus on the experiences of biblical women and not how they were perceived within a patriarchal context.Women on the Biblical Road explores, through an eco-feminist lens, female heroes, their journey cycles, and the oral tradition from which these stories originate. At the core of this look at women on the biblical road is the book of Ruth, the Bible's most complete tale of the female adventure. Caspi and Havrelock point out that the journey of Ruth and Naomi corresponds with a cycle of return and redemption, inseparable from Ruth's and Naomi's experience on the road. The authors also propose that this story of two women from distinctly different places who are able to fuse their goals and help each other survive, points to plausible cultural reconciliation in the Middle East and beyond. This book is intended for any university class studying the Hebrew Bible, courses at synagogues or churches, and women interested in tracing female spiritual traditions. Women on the Biblical Road is an important book for the Women's Spirituality Movement and will surely appeal to the contemporary woman interested in reconstructing women's traditions.

Return, is the study of Naomi & Ruth. Together we will examine their experiences of being widows, their journey through the beginnings of an uncertain future, and their return to the place Jehovah had promised to bless. In search of a better life, Naomi had wandered away from Jehovah, His people and the land He promised to bless when His people followed His ways. In contrast, Ruth contended with Naomi so she could pursue Him, even at great personal costs. She willingly put aside any hope for her future or comfort. As they returned to the Promised Land, Naomi faced an uncertain welcome among her friends and family since she was accompanied only by a daughter-in-law, whose ancestry was questionable. Ruth's future was uncertain as she faced a community not likely to accept her foreign heritage. Would they allow her the opportunity to work for needed provisions? Might she end up being alone as she aged after Naomi's time on earth was finished? Both widows experienced trials and triumphs as the Spirit of the Lord beckoned them to ... Return.

The book of Ruth is among the only three books of the Old Testament named after women-Ruth, Esther, and Judith. It is a fascinating short story. Loss and Redemption: Lessons from Naomi and Ruth explores the relevance and resonance of the story of Ruth as lessons for today's reader. The lessons go beyond grieving to perennial human problems. It is not a technical biblical analysis of the book of Ruth but a practical and straightforward application of Ruth's story to specific daily struggles. "The book of Ruth remains among the most fascinating, and yet elusive, chronicles in the Bible. In this notably well-written study, Fr. Thomas systematically traces its meanings and ongoing resonance in notably clear, yet resonant language. A gem of a book." -Jim Cullen, PhD, Author of Restless in the Promised Land: Catholics and the American Dream and other books "This excellent book illuminates the levels of meaning that can be found in the book of Ruth. While engaging us with its perceptive writing, it draws some extremely important lessons from the actions of this much-loved story and relates them to our present situation." -Tom Milton, Author "This book has brought both old and new insights to the Old Testament's story of Ruth and Naomi to help Christians in this time of world suffering. He draws on modern scientific resources and findings, along with traditional theological insights." -Sidney Callahan, PhD, Author, Lecturer, and Licensed Psychologist "Thomas's use of the book of Ruth as the instrument for guiding us through the maze of current physical and spiritual loss provides the reader with a thoughtful direction that so many of us seek." -Mary Lou Dillon, an educator
