Ruwenzori, is a fable based on the tradition that the Ta Merian ancestors came from Moon Mountain (Ruwenzori) . The ancient Egyptians (Ta Merians) believed their ancestors came from Kush, "The Land of the Gods." Kush was the old world name for Ethiopia which meant all of Africa south of the Nile Valley. The Ruwenzori Mountains are at the head-waters of the Nile River, south of Lake Victoria. Even though the village and the lake in the fable are fictional, as are the characters, there are several lakes near the border between the Congo and Uganda where this story could have taken place. However, we soon got through, and marched on a couple of hours to the garden in which we were to sleep. After a change and a cup of tea, the Muanja and mud water and reeds were forgotten. On Wednesday, April Ist, we were clue to reach Mitiana. But another swamp lay between as and our goal. The water was not so deep as the M nanja, but the mud was far more objectionable. It is, however, impos sible to live for six months in Buganda without learning to look upon swamps as necessary evils and to take them as a matter of course. The country through which we had been passing for three clays was wonderfully varied and beautiful. W'ood and forest, plantain-gardens and great sweeps of tiger-grass succeeded each other in quick regularity, and combined in forming pictures of great beauty. Our drum gave notice to Mr. Sugden of the arrival of our party, and he, with a large number of native friends, came out to meet us.
