Misunderstandings of biblical creation texts have resulted from a lack of appreciation of the cultural context of the inspired writers. Views of nature have changed greatly over history. At the time of ancient Israel, people gazed up to the star-studded firmament that separated the "waters above" from the "waters below" and the land. Land was bounded by sea which merged with the "waters above" at the horizon. The universe was close and intimate. Pagan peoples believed gods occupied this realm and accounted for much of observed cause and effect. Biblical writers also viewed nature in this context. However, they were distinctly monotheistic writing of a supreme God who made and gave meaning to everything. God chose a covenant relationship with a select people. This relationship was based on belief in God (faith). Fast-forward through many twists and turns of intellectual history, and we come to the modern scientific age. We picture our home as a spherical planet rotating once a day and orbiting the sun yearly. We gaze out at a vast space seeing distant suns (the stars) and enormous collections of stars (galaxies). Light travels at a known speed; thus, astronomers peer back to times billions of years in the past. We need to avoid concordism, conflating modern views with the biblical text. The concordism error has occurred throughout church history up to the present. The book addresses this as well as some discoveries of modern science that were unknown to ancient people. Such discoveries give us good reason to bow in awe before the Creator. Even though mankind's views of nature have greatly changed with time, the message of the Bible is the same. We come to God through faith as did Abraham who saw "more than meets the eye."

Americans and other English speakers have long associated the name of Hans Christian Andersen exclusively with fairy tales for children. Danes and other Scandinavians, however, have preserved an awareness that the fairy tales are but part of an extensive and respectable lifework that embraces several other literary forms. Moreover, they have never lost sight of the fact that the fairy tales themselves address adults no less than children. Significantly, many of Andersen's coevals in the U.S. knew of his broader literary activity and the sophistication of his fairy tales. Major authors and critics commented on his various works in leading magazines and books, establishing a noteworthy corpus of criticism. One of them, Horace E. Scudder, wrote a seminal essay that surpassed virtually all contemporary writing on him in any language. The basic purpose of this study, the first of its kind, is to trace the course of American Andersen criticism over the second half of the nineteenth century and to view it in several American contexts.

In the book, More than Meets the Eye; A Journey into the Mysteries of Psychic Phenomena, I invite the reader to join me in a fascinating trip to the field known as parapsychology. Parapsychology, or psi phenomena, are psychic events which do not lend themselves to regular explanation based on evidence provided by the senses; they are said to be extrasensory. These phenomena are: telepathy, clairvoyance, psychokinesis, and precognition. Our communication is based ordinarily on hearing or reading the others words, but in telepathic communication we are said to know the others thoughts directly, without the mediation of the senses. In clairvoyance, known also as remote viewing, we are said to see remote places without using the eyes. In psychokinesis we are said to be able to bend, push, or break objects without touching them, and in precognition we have direct glimpses of the future. Are telepathy, clairvoyance and other kinds of psychic phenomena real, or are they figments of an overly active imagination? And what about phenomena such as out-of-body experiences, apparitions of dead people, and reincarnation? Are such phenomena real? On the basis of my own experience, of the experiences of people I had interviewed, and of information I had gleaned from books by credible authors, I reach certain interesting conclusions which I share with the reader.

Have you ever used Dr. Google to diagnose your own illness? I have and trust me it doesn't work. How about taking it a step further and researching your own treatment for that same self-diagnosed illness? I have done that too and it doesn't work either. In fact it just makes matters a whole lot worse. The problem is that sometimes when you need help and nobody seems to know the answers it's the only logical thing left to do. Well, after years of self-diagnosis and multiple doctors visits, I was finally and officially diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. Having never heard those words before, never mind understanding what it was, I was left a little bit clueless. My problem was that every piece of information I was given was medical-based and I couldn't find a single thing that was personally relatable. I mean the medical facts were great, but I had nothing to prepare me for the psychological stress, social awkwardness or unforeseen accidents that were about to barge their way into my life, changing me forever. So I have decided to share my experiences, some personal stories and a few tips on what helped me, in the hope that someone who is suffering from Ulcerative Colitis can find some comfort that what they are going through is normal, can be overcome and that there really is a light at the end of the tunnel.
