Non è forse fuor di luogo paragonare le giovani (e meno giovani) generazioni di architetti di oggi ad “apprendisti stregoni” incapaci di controllare fino in fondo ciò che il calcolatore è in grado di generare. Una condizione permanente di “fuori controllo”, il cui risultato è: il predominio dei nuovi materiali sul linguaggio, la perdita del “filo a piombo” (statica ed estetica si trovano adesso in campi avversi), la preminenza dell’icona rispetto al programma funzionale (destinazione dell’edificio), la dissoluzione dell’oggetto architettonico nel “paesaggio” , la atopia, la crisi della tettonica come antefatto logico dell’architettura e l’asservimento della firmitas, della utilitas, della venustas a una “forma predeterminata”. Una condizione che la copertina del volume interpreta con la “scomposizione” del frontespizio dell’Essai sur l’Architecture dell’abate Laugier, un invito a ricomporre l’infranto.

Questo volume si occupa proprio del tessuto compatto e ripetitivo della città europea, della regola piuttosto che dell’eccezione, della residenza più che dell’edificio specialistico. La scansione dello spazio urbano in isolati, che fin dall’antichità ha costituito lo strumento più efficace per lo sviluppo degli insediamenti umani, rappresenta oggi un antidoto sia al modello della città diffusa, diseconomica e insostenibile, sia alla crescita della città moderna, dove l’abbondanza di spazio pubblico a disposizione si è scontrata spesso con l’impossibilità di gestirlo in maniera efficace. Può la densità essere lo strumento analitico di interpretazione dei fenomeni urbani e contemporaneamente un parametro progettuale di prefigurazione dello spazio architettonico? La densità nelle sue diverse accezioni e unità di misura, costituisce un nodo di grande rilevanza per l'interpretazione dei fenomeni urbani e degli spazi architettonici. Incoraggia una riconciliazione dello sguardo quantitativo con quello mirato alla lettura qualitativa, riavvicina discipline disgraziatamente disgiunte nell'attuale pratica, suggerisce mezzi e stili di vita che sono alla base del nostro habitat. Ciò che infatti ha da sempre caratterizzato la città non è solo la sua dimensione ed il numero degli abitanti, ma un secondo fattore fondamentale: la densità appunto, o meglio un valore di densità minimo in grado di produrre divisione del lavoro, varietà di funzioni e attività, complessità della struttura sociale. Studiare la densità urbana della città significa anche tornare a misurare lo spazio, atto necessario prima di qualsiasi azione progettuale e pianificatoria. Questo ritorno ad una "nuova modellistica", una sorta di abaco di soluzioni possibili alle diverse scale del progetto, segna l'apertura verso nuovi modi di progettare la città. Con una maggiore libertà di azione dovuta proprio all'utilizzo della densità come parametro di calcolo, siamo in grado di anticipare quante più possibili configurazioni della "materia urbana", a partire dalle regole esistenti e dalla situazione spaziale del contesto di progetto. L'architettura progetta distanze oltrechè volumi, la densità ne è quindi un parametro centrale; l'urbanistica e la progettazione urbana, utilizzando il calcolo della densità come livello minimo di pianificazione, dovranno tendere a configurare in futuro le città, influenzandone gli aspetti non solo numerici, ma anche tipologici, morfologici e spaziali. Riscattato dalla computistica, il fattore densità, si trasforma allora in una variabile urbana in grado di definire la forma attuale della città, divenendone strumento di misurazione e di progetto. Luca Reale, nato a Roma nel 1973, , lavora nell'ambito della progettazione architettonica e urbana nello studio osa architettura e paesaggio, di cui è uno dei fondatori.Dottore di ricerca, è docente a contratto presso la facoltà di Architettura di Roma "Ludovico Quaroni", dove svolge attività didattica e di ricerca dal 2000 e presso l'istituto Quasar. Ha preso parte a workshop e concorsi di progettazione nazionali e internazionali, è autore di articoli e saggi su progetto e teorie urbane.
