The fact that Iberian researchers study the history of Rome is not too surprising, as the Romans were in Iberia, and the remains of their cities, people and gods can be found all over the Peninsula. However, it might at first sight seem surprising that Latin America should show much interest in what happened in those remote times. Yet each country forges its identity by searching for its roots – and theirs were, undoubtedly, on the shores of the Mediterranean. Thus, we have a very long and varied menu, abundantly served by over thirty researchers from universities in Brazil, Argentina, Portugal, Mexico, Uruguay, Chile and Spain. This is a very fertile and diversified panorama in which a very colourful mosaic is enlivened by thematic unity. The volume draws upon a great range of documentation to trace a broad perspective in space and time, covering the whole of Classical Antiquity (Greece and Rome) from East to West, from archaic Corinth to the role played by the Vandals in the transition between Antiquity and feudalism. It also considers artistic manifestations, such as ceramic artefacts, to shed light upon the way the surrounding reality was perceived. One of the characteristics of Ancient History research in Latin America lies in its recourse to literary sources, which is enthusiastically analysed using theories about history and society. Unsurprisingly, we also see the influence of daily life (now global): identity and confrontation, local versus global, the pragmatism of the concrete versus the apparent uselessness of abstraction… What about that mysterious symbiosis between political, economic, military and religious powers? We feel it intensely nowadays, more or less evident here and there.

Disconnected is a path-breaking analysis of the relationship between schooling and employers in Latin America. It is sophisticated in its design, using multiple surveys and multiple methods. It distinguishes carefully among different types of skills and the relationship of each type to employment outcomes and employer needs. It examines both the demand and the supply side of the labor market. And it provides guidance for further work. We commend this book to all readers, scholars, and practitioners concerned with schooling and job markets in Latin America.

The Colonizer S Model Of The World written by J. M. Blaut and has been published by Guilford Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-07-23 with Social Science categories.

This influential book challenges one of the most pervasive and powerful beliefs of our time--that Europe rose to modernity and world dominance due to unique qualities of race, environment, culture, mind, or spirit, and that progress for the rest of the world resulted from the diffusion of European civilization. J. M. Blaut persuasively argues that this doctrine is not grounded in the facts of history and geography, but in the ideology of colonialism. Blaut traces the colonizer's model of the world from its 16th-century origins to its present form in theories of economic development, modernization, and new world order.

In The Humboldtian Tradition, eleven scholars consider Wilhelm von Humboldt as a historical phenomenon and a contemporary symbol. Inspired by the growing body of literature that in recent years has problematized the modern research university, they put Humboldt’s basic academic principles into context and discuss their significance for the current debate about higher education. The authors draw on the latest research in order to bring the educational and research policies of our day into perspective. At a time when the university is undergoing deep-seated transformations worldwide, they address the question how we should relate to the ideas associated with Humboldt’s name. What is his relevance to the twenty-first century? Contributors are: Mitchell Ash, Pieter Dhondt, Ylva Hasselberg, Marja Jalava, Peter Josephson, Thomas Karlsohn, Claudia Lindén, Johan Östling, Sharon Rider, Hans Ruin, Susan Wright.
