Professor George Vass has not confined himself to the detailed exposition of the thought of his predecessor but, through a critical analysis of his views, tries to enter into dialogue with him. Professor Vass, Fellow of Heythrop College, University of London, and for twenty years holder of Karl Rahner's chair at the University of Innsbruck, entered the Society of Jesus in 1946, and obtained his qualifications in Philosophy and Theology at various European universities. He taught at Heythrop College, Oxon, and the University of London, before his call to the University of Innsbruck in 1976. Introduction to Sacramental Theology presents a complete overview of sacramental theology from the viewpoint of the body. This viewpoint is supported, in the first place, by Revelation, for which the sacraments are the place where we enter into contact with the body of the risen Jesus. It is a viewpoint, secondly, which is firmly rooted in our concrete human bodily experience, thus allowing for a strong connection between faith and life, creation and redemption. From this point of view, the treatise on the sacraments occupies a strategic role. For the sacraments appear, not as the last of a series of topics (after dealing with Creation, Christ, the Church), but as the original place in which to stand in order to contemplate the entire Christian mystery. This point of view of the body, which resonates with contemporary philosophy, sheds fruitful light on classical themes, such as the relationship of the sacraments with creation, the composition of the sacramental sign, the efficacy of the sacraments, the sacramental character, the role of the minister, or the relationship of the sacrament with the Church as a sacrament. As a result of this approach, the Eucharist takes on a central role, since this is the sacrament where the body of Jesus is made present. The rest of the sacraments are seen as prolongations of the eucharistic body, so as to fill all the time and space of the faithful. This foundation of the theology of the sacraments in eucharistic theology is supported by an analysis of the patristic and medieval tradition. In order to support its conclusions, Introduction to Sacramental Theology examines the doctrine of Scripture (especially St. John and St. Paul), the main patristic and medieval authors (St. Augustine, Hugh of St. Victor, St. Bonaventure, St. Thomas Aquinas), the response of Trent to the protestant challenges, up to modern authors such as Scheeben, Rahner, Ratzinger, or Chauvet, including the teaching of Vatican II about the Church as a kind of sacrament.

Fr. Jake Empereur, S.J., vicar and liturgist at the San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio, Texas, was for many years a professor of systematic and liturgical theology at the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley and the Graduate Theological Union. During that time he founded the Institute for Spirituality and Worship, a nine-month renewal program which has trained people from all around the world. He was also the founding editor of Modern Liturgy Magazine that still continues today under the name of Ministry and Liturgy. At Berkeley he was very much involved in the area of theology and the arts. He also taught courses in the enneagram and spiritual direction. In 1994 he moved to San Antonio, Texas, to work in Hispanic ministry at the San Fernando Cathedral and to be the cathedral liturgist. There he continues his work in teaching and writing while being engaged as a full time parish priest. He is the author of several books and articles in the field of liturgy and sacraments. His latest books are The Enneagram and Spiritual Direction and Spiritual Direction and the Gay Person. His latest book with the title of La Vida Sacra: Hispanic Sacramental Theology should appear in 2006. Christopher G. Kiesling is also the author of _The Spirit and Practice of the Liturgy_, _The Future of the Christian Sunday_, and _Celibacy, Prayer, and Friendship_.
