Can a layperson preside at a blessing? Should a wedding always be celebrated during a celebration of eucharist? In this second volume of the Q&A series, Father Dennis Smolarski, SJ, answers these and more questions about the liturgy and its celebration--40 in all--posed by priests, liturgists, music directors, liturgy committees, ministry coordinators and diocesan liturgy offices. As in the first volume, Q&A: The Mass, the answers are informed by both the author's legal expertise and his pastoral sensitivity. The answer to each question takes into account the latest edition of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, as well as other official documents. At the same time, each answer is informed with the common sense and pastoral concern of an experienced presider and member of the assembly.

The sacraments are a precious, seven-faceted jewel embedded in the heart of the Catholic faith. Yet, while believers readily acknowledge the centrality of these rites to the faith, they may be a bit fuzzy when it comes to explaining them. That's where this book comes to the rescue "Liturgy 101: Sacraments and Sacramentals" provides a concise and easy-to-follow overview of the liturgy that will immerse you into the Church's teaching and practice of the seven sacraments. The author, respected Catholic scholar and educator Daniel G. Van Slyke, grounds the book in Sacred Scripture, the teachings of the Church, and the rites with which the Church celebrates the sacraments. Following a helpful introductory chapter that explains the vocabulary used to discuss worship, "Liturgy 101" explores the seven sacraments one by one. Each chapter explains, in an accessible manner, the sacrament's origins, how and by whom it is celebrated, and what it accomplishes. Van Slyke also addresses frequently asked pastoral, practical, and canonical questions concerning the celebration of the sacraments. "Liturgy 101" will empower you to more fruitfully participate in sacred liturgy by helping you to understand, appreciate, love, and celebrate the sacraments that Christ has entrusted to the Church. Both resistance to and renewed interest in the sacraments mark current theological thought. This work acknowledges human limitations of the sacraments but stresses that God's relationship to human beings cannot be other than sacramental." Sacramental structures and events constitute salvation history, and thus permeate all theology. What makes this sacramental view comprehensible is faith; faith is an indispensable precondition for a sacramental theology. Therefore, the author first demonstrates the preconditions of faith on which sacramental theology rests, and what place it holds within the whole of theology. Following this, he briefly presents the concept of sacraments and the history of that concept, the teachings of Church tradition on sacraments in general, and the basic features of a sacramental theology. Next, he explains from a theological perspective the traditional sacraments of the Catholic Church, including related topics such as indulgences and sacramentals.

Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Theology - Miscellaneous, , course: Canon law, language: English, abstract: This term paper deals with the use of sacramentals. The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines Sacramentals as “sacred signs which bear a resemblance to the sacraments. They signify effects, particularly of a spiritual nature, which are obtained through the intercession of the Church. By them, men are disposed to receive the chief effect of the sacraments, and various occasions in life are rendered holy.” There are three classes of sacramentals, which are blessings, consecrations and exorcism in the strict sense. The code of canon law assigns four general canons to sacramentals and they refer to some paragraphs of the document Sacrosanctum Concilium. The document specifies their nature and purpose; their relationship with the Paschal mystery; their pastoral value; and the need to reform them as well as the criteria to carry out such reforms. The sacramentals are certain blessed items that are spiritually beneficial to the faithful for example Holy Water, Medal, Rosary, Scapular, Blessed Salt, Crucifixes, Candles, Blessings, etc. According to Sacrosanctum Concilium, the sacramentals are sacred signs which have a sacrament-like structures. They have been created by the Church to produce spiritual and material fruits; and their efficacy originates from the intercession of the Church.
