No one goes to the desert for forty days without expecting to find someone or something there. Christians, by their very nature, are seekers. We look for direction, we look for fulfillment, and we look for others who want to walk the road with us. We knock on the doors of the Desert Fathers and Mothers, seeking shelter and wisdom. Embracing the Sacred Season is a guide in this search, at the center of which we hope to find God. What happens when the door is opened, and we know that we are in the presence of God? These unique reflections for the entire seasons of both Lent and Easter, based on Scripture readings, are direct, and help us take an honest look at our relationship with God. Each is followed up by reflection questions and a prayer. Let Janis Yaekel take you on a spiritual dance with God, as you embrace the sacred season.

What does it look like to live a flourishing, messy, wonderful life together? As parents, we’re tasked with nurturing and guiding our children, even as we navigate our own wonderings about faith. In the overwhelm and constant demands of life, is it possible to tend to our own souls and to our family’s flourishing? With tender curiosity and contemplative wisdom, Every Season Sacred is a weekly invitation to grow spiritually alongside our children. Blending thoughtful musings and practical resources, author Kayla Craig meets parents right where they are, offering honest and hopeful reflections for every season of the parenting journey; encouragement to parent with intention and imagination, presence and purpose; and open-ended discussion prompts and prayers to explore and practice as a family. Every Season Sacred is an invitation to ask big questions, embrace faithful rhythms, and experience God’s mysterious, loving presence together. You don’t have to have all the answers—and if we’re honest, many answers aren’t ours to have. This is the beauty of faith. As you parent your children and explore your questions together, may God reveal sacred moments to you—in each season of your life.

From Zora Neale Hurston to Derek Walcott to Toni Morrison, New World black authors have written about African-derived religious traditions and spiritual practices. The Sacred Act of Reading examines religion and sociopolitical power in modern and contemporary texts of a variety of genres from the black Americas. By engaging with spiritual traditions such as Vodou, Kumina, and Protestant Christianity while drawing on canonical Eurocentric literary theory, Anne Margaret Castro presents a novel, nuanced reading of power through the physical and metaphysical relationships portrayed in these great works of New World black literature. Castro examines prophecy in the dramas of Derek Walcott, preaching in the ethnography of Zora Neale Hurston, and liturgy in the novels of Toni Morrison, offering comparative readings alongside the works of Afro-Colombian anthropologist Manuel Zapata Olivella, Jamaican sociologist Erna Brodber, and Canadian fiction writer Nalo Hopkinson. The Sacred Act of Reading is the first book to bring together literary texts, historical and contemporary anthropological studies, theology, and critical theory to show how black authors in the Americas employ spiritual phenomena as theoretical frameworks for thinking within, against, and beyond structures of political dominance, dependence, and power.

Excerpt from The Ecclesiastical Year, Vol. 2: Its Festivals and Holy Seasons; To Which Are Added the Legends or Lives of the Saints; A Household Work for Instruction and Devotion The most evident and glorious proof of the truth and divinity of the Catholic Church, is doubtless the fact, established in a manifold manner from her origin, that she has produced Saints; that is, that many of her members have after their death obtained possession of heaven. That such is really the case, has been confirmed by undeniable evidence, and by the wonders of divine Omnipotence. The sanctity of so many of her members is the strongest proof of the sanctity of the Church herself, and it is therefore very natural, that the Catholic Church alone (the only one founded by Christ Himself), is enabled to produce such living fruits of sanctity, since only to the true Church can the eternal truth give such testimony, confirmed by the wonders of His Omnipotence. At the same time it is an established fact, that, out of the pale of the Catholic Church, there is no community which ever could or ever will be able to establish the beatitude of even one of its deceased members. The sanctity of so many departed members of the Catholic Church is a matter of consolation and a cause of joy to us, children of that Church. The relation in which we, who still belong to the Church militant upon earth, stand to the Saints, who already belong to the Church triumphant in heaven, and which we call in ecclesiastical language: Communion of Saints, avails to our own salvation, so that in truth the communion and veneration of the Saints constitute one of the most beautiful and the most sublime doctrines of our whole religion. If this is so, it is no wonder that the veneration of the Saints in the Catholic Church is attacked in various ways by her opponents. The most grievous charges, and not unfrequently absurd objections are made by Protestants and infidels. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
