A leading spiritual teacher reveals how Celtic spirituality—listening to the sacred around us and inside of us—can help us heal the earth, overcome our conflicts, and reconnect with ourselves. John Philip Newell shares the long, hidden tradition of Celtic Christianity, explaining how this earth-based spirituality can help us rediscover the natural rhythms of life and deepen our spiritual connection with God, with each other, and with the earth. Newell introduces some of Celtic Christianity’s leading practitioners, both saints and pioneers of faith, whose timeless wisdom is more necessary than ever, including: Pelagius, who shows us how to look beyond sin to affirm our sacredness as part of all God’s creation, and courageously stand up for our principles in the face of oppression. Brigid of Kildare, who illuminates the interrelationship of all things and reminds us of the power of the sacred feminine to overcome those seeking to control us. John Muir, who encourages us to see the holiness and beauty of wilderness and what we must do to protect these gifts. Teilhard de Chardin, who inspires us to see how science, faith, and our future tell one universal story that begins with sacredness. By embracing the wisdom of Celtic Christianity, we can learn how to listen to the sacred and see the divine in all of creation and within each of us. Human beings are inherently spiritual creatures who intuitively see the sacred in nature and within one another, but our cultures—and at times even our faiths—have made us forget what each of us already know deep in our souls but have learned to suppress. Sacred Earth, Sacred Soul offers a new spiritual foundation for our lives, once centered on encouragement, guidance, and hope for creating a better world.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Around 50 CE, a shift began to occur in parts of the Celtic world, from Druidic to Christian wisdom. The first Christian teacher to emerge in Celtic territory was Irenaeus of Lyons, who had studied in Asia Minor under Polycarp, who in turn had been a student of St. John in Ephesus. #2 Irenaeus was a priest in the second century who was against the way in which celibacy was beginning to be seen as a higher path than marriage. He insisted that the divine and the human are inseparable, and that heaven is found in the things of earth. #3 Irenaeus’s teachings on earth’s sacredness and humanity’s primal instinct for it represent a betrayal of humanity’s deep natural knowing. Christ, according to Irenaeus, is a radical affirmation of this knowing. #4 Pelagius was a teacher who arrived in Rome in the 380s. He became a spiritual adviser to some of the leading families of the church in Rome. But controversy engulfed him almost immediately, as the church father Jerome and others relentlessly criticized him.

Few issues have caused the church more difficulty through the ages than those surrounding the human body. Throughout much of Christian history, spiritual seekers have considered the body to be, at best, a hindrance to spiritual enlightenment, and, at worst, an enemy to be suppressed. Many of our contemporary negative preoccupations with physical appearance, image, and sexuality derive from this ancient and habitual denial of the notion that we were created in God's image. In Echo of the Soul bestselling author J. Philip Newell finds that the human body, like creation, is actually the dwelling place of God. Using the Old Testament Wisdom literature, which informed Celtic spirituality's positive understanding of what it means to be human, Newell looks at each part of the body as a sacred text that reveals something of the Divine. Looking back to a time before Christians began to distrust their physicality, Newell shows that our most ancient texts challenge modern assumptions about love, beauty, sexuality, learning, wisdom, power, and responsibility, and bridges the body/spirit divide.

Once upon a time, humans lived in intimate relationship with nature. Whether disillusioned by the dominant church or unfulfilled by traditional expressions of faith, many of us long for a deeper spirtuality. Victoria Loorz certainly did. Coping with an unraveling vocation, identity, and planet, Loorz turned to the wanderings of spiritual leaders and the sanctuary of the natural world, eventually cofounding the Wild Church Network and Seminary of the Wild. With an ecospiritual lens on biblical narratives and a fresh look at a community larger than our own species, Church of the Wild uncovers the wild roots of faith and helps us deepen our commitment to a suffering earth by falling in love with it--and calling it church. Through mystical encounters with wild deer, whispers from a scrubby oak tree, wordless conversation with a cougar, and more, Loorz helps us connect to a love that literally holds the world together--a love that calls us into communion with all creatures.

The story of my life and my Christian journey is about memories, conversions, and convictions. Memories of what I absorbed growing up. Conversions: major changes in my understanding of the Bible and God and Jesus and what it means to be Christian. Convictions: the affirmations that have flowed from those changes. Three kinds of conversions and convictions have shaped my life: intellectual, political and religious . . .' Marcus Borg 'Many know Marcus Borg as a brilliant scholar, which he is. But he has a pastoral side as well. I've stood with Marcus after his lectures and watched as person after person comes up to say, "I lost my faith, but your books have helped me get it back," or "I wouldn't be in the church today if I hadn't come across your books," or "Your work has helped me stay a Christian."'
