This study explores the relationship between the sacred and the virtual, emphasizing the sacred as a divinely dependent, consecrated space activated through ritual, mediating between the profane and the holy. The central argument is that the virtual is fundamentally incompatible with the ritual form—a concept developed by Romano Guardini and others, including Joseph Ratzinger—which holds that the sacred is not merely acknowledged but made present through ritualized actions that require tangible, participatory engagement. Even if the virtual realm were acknowledged as real and retained both the bodily presence of the faithful and the Divine Presence, the rite would still be ineffective. Virtuality prevents the proper enactment of the rite, rendering it ineffective. At its core, the ritual form is performative, embodied, and consecratory. It requires physical presence, material elements, and a structured sequence of gestures, symbols, and words that together make the divine encounter possible. Their absence in virtual spaces disrupts ritual form, compromising its sacramental function.

"Digital Religion refers to the contemporary practice and understanding of religion in both online and offline contexts, and how these contexts intersect with each other. Scholars in this growing field recognize that religion has been influenced by its engagement with computer-mediated digital spaces, including not only the Internet, but other emerging technologies, such as mobile phones, digital wearables, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence. The Oxford Handbook of Digital Religion provides a comprehensive overview of religion as seen and performed through various platforms and cultural spaces created by digital technology. The text covers religious interaction with a wide range of digital media forms (including social media, websites, gaming environments, virtual and augmented realities, and artificial intelligence) and highlights examples of technological engagement and negotiation within the major world religions (i.e., Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism). Additional sections cover the global manifestations of religious community, identity, ethics, and authority, with a final group of chapters addressing emerging technologies and the future of the field. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the project, the Handbook is led by co-editors representing the humanistic and social scientific fields of religious studies and communication, though both also have experience in how those disciplines intersect"--

""Holy Water"" explores the universal significance of water in religious traditions, examining its role in rituals, beliefs, and practices across diverse cultures. From baptism in Christianity to ablutions in Islam and the reverence for the Ganges in Hinduism, water symbolizes purification, renewal, and a connection to the divine. The book uniquely bridges religious studies, history, and anthropology to reveal how water acts as a conduit between humanity and the spiritual realm. The book presents a historical narrative of water rituals, tracing their evolution from ancient civilizations to modern practices. It emphasizes the concept of sacred geography, highlighting how rivers, lakes, and springs became pilgrimage sites. Structured in three parts, the book first introduces fundamental concepts of water symbolism. It then examines specific religious traditions, detailing water's role in practices like baptism and purification rites. Finally, it analyzes the socio-cultural impact of holy water, discussing its influence on social identities and environmental stewardship. By adopting a comparative approach, ""Holy Water"" reveals shared meanings in the use of water across religions. This fosters a deeper appreciation for the common threads that connect humanity's diverse spiritual traditions. The book also addresses contemporary debates surrounding water rights and climate change, offering a fresh perspective on challenges facing the planet.

CNN called Richard Thieme "a member of the cyber avant-garde". Digital Delirium named him "one of the most creative minds of the digital generation". Now Richard Thieme's wisdom on the social and cultural dimensions of technology is available in a single volume. "Islands in the Clickstream" ranges beyond the impact of technology to spirituality, psychological insight, and social commentary. Now that people are used to living in virtual worlds and move easily between online and offline worlds, they want to connect that experience to the deeper issues of our lives, including spiritual issues. Some examples include "Dreams Engineers Have", "The Crazy Lady on the Treadmill", and "Whistleblowers and Team Players". These essays raise serious questions for thoughtful readers. They have attracted favorable commentary from around the world and a fanatic, almost rabid fan base.* This author has become an extremely popular and highly visible talking head. He is a rare "personality" in the otherwise bland world of technology commentators.* The book leverages the loyalty of his audience in the same way Bill O'Reilly's "The O'Reilly Factor" and Al Franken's "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them" do.* The book is an easy read intended to provoke thought, discussion and disagreement.
