La historia empieza cuando Estela Guzmán conoce a Álvaro, un cubano que ha luchado en la guerra de la independencia. Su amor parece florecer, pero el corazón de Álvaro todavía pertenece a Catalina: su antigua prometida. Sin embargo, su relación es imposible, ya que el padre de ella asesinó al de Álvaro. Cuando el señor Guzmán regresa a Lima, acompañado de Catalina, las pasiones enterradas volverán a aparecer. Mercedes Cabello de Carbonera fue una escritora peruana. Influenciada por el naturalismo y positivismo de Francia y por autores como Honoré de Balzac o Émile Zola, fue la iniciadora del corriente realista en la novela peruana. Periodista y articulista, participó en la prensa peruana con artículos y ensayos sociales y feministas. Además, escribió seis novelas de contenido social. Su obra fue poco comprendida durante la época y las críticas, sumadas a la sífilis que le había contagiado su esposo, afectaron los últimos años de su vida.

In Rewriting Womanhood, Nancy LaGreca explores the subversive refigurings of womanhood in three novels by women writers: La hija del bandido (1887) by Refugio Barragán de Toscano (Mexico; 1846–1916), Blanca Sol (1888) by Mercedes Cabello de Carbonera (Peru; 1845–1909), and Luz y sombra (1903) by Ana Roqué (Puerto Rico; 1853–1933). While these women were both acclaimed and critiqued in their day, they have been largely overlooked by contemporary mainstream criticism.
