KARYA SASTRA pada hakikatnya mengandung nilainilai kemanusiaan yang dapat diinterprestasikan oleh masing-masing individu untuk menjalani kehidupan. Cara menikmati sebuah karya sastra tentulah melalui apresiasi terhadap karya-karya tersebut. Proses apresiasi inilah sebenarnya hakikat dari membaca karya sastra. Apresiasi karya sastra merupakan bagian dari upaya melengkapi asupan gizi untuk batin seseorang. Dalam ranah pendidikan, apresiasi karya sastra mengambil peranan yang semestinya tak sedikit dalam upaya mencapai tujuan pendidikan nasional. Hal ini sejalan dengan tujuan mendasar dari pembelajaran bahasa dan sastra Indonesia, yaitu meningkatkan kemampuan peserta didik untuk berkomunikasi, bertukar-pikiran, menyampaikan pendapat, berperilaku nasionalis dan bersikap demokratis. Tujuan ini kemudian diturunkan dalam standar kompetensi dan kompetensi dasar pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia, diantaranya adalah pembelajaran sastra. Sebagaimana kita ketahui, pendidikan formal di Indonesia merangkum apresiasi sastra dalam pelajaran Bahasa Indonesia. Pelajaran Bahasa dan Sastra Indonesia memiliki peranan kunci dalam upaya mencapai apa yang disebut sebagai tujuan pendidikan nasional. UU Sistem Pendidikan Nasional menyatakan bahwa tujuan pendidikan nasional adalah mengembangkan kemampuan dan membentuk watak serta peradaban bangsa yang bermartabat dalam rangka mencerdaskan kehidupan bangsa, bertujuan untuk berkembangnya potensi peserta didik agar menjadi manusia yang beriman dan bertakwa kepada Tuhan Yang Maha Esa, berakhlak mulia, sehat, berilmu, cakap, kreatif, mandiri, dan menjadi warga negara yang demokratis serta bertanggung jawab. Pertanyaannya, Mengapa sastra? Apa pentingnya apresiasi karya sastra untuk mencapai tujuan pendidikan nasional kita? Sekali lagi, karya sastra pada hakikatnya mengajarkan nilai-nilai kemanusiaan, keluhuran budi, pertentangan nilai dan tradisi, demokratisasi, serta pembangunan pola pikir dan argumentasi. Karya sastra melakukan kesemua hal tersebut dengan cara yang tidak menggurui. Hal ini sejalan dengan kecenderungan afeksi manusia yang membutuhkan tuntunan dengan cara yang implisit dan bernuansa menghibur. Berdasar paparan di atas, maka selayaknyalah para pelajar mulai dari tingkat paling bawah hingga menengah (Sekolah Dasar sampai Sekolah Menengah Atas) mendapat akses yang baik terhadap karya-karya sastra. Hal ini juga seiring dengan peningkatan minat baca untuk kalangan anak dan pemuda di Indonesia. Permasalahan yang kerap muncul dalam pengenalan karya sastra terhadap pembaca muda dan pemula adalah adanya jurang kemampuan pembacaaan dengan keberadaan karya sastra, terutama sastra klasik. Hal ini disebabkan karena pada dasarnya karya sastra klasik adalah konsumsi orang-orang dewasa. Kesenjangan itu terutama menyangkut aspek bahasa, kerumitan plot, serta kompleksitas tema dan muatan dalam setiap karya. Ironisnya, dalam kesenjangan ini, para pelajar kita pada tingkat dasar maupun menengah diharapkan memahami sejarah dan melakukan apresiasi terhadap karya sastra Indoonesia, terutama yang telah digariskan dalam kurikulum. Adanya jurang ini perlu dijembatani. Upaya penyaduran karya sastra klasik merupakan salah satu upaya mendekatkan pembaca muda dan pemula terhadap karya sastra, sebuah jembatan untuk mencintai karya bangsa sendiri dan menumbuhkembangkan budaya membaca sejak dini. Upaya penyaduran bukanlah upaya reduksi terhadap kebesaran karya-karya klasik tersebut, namun lebih pada upaya pengenalan awal untuk pembaca muda dan pemula melalui penyederhanaan baik dari segi plot, bahasa, namun tak mengurangi amanat atau pesan dari setiap karya. Diharapkan upaya ini memberikan rasa ingin tahu para peserta didik untuk lebih mengenal lagi dan meningkatkan apresiasi terhadap karya satra, terutama karya sastra klasik. Upaya penyaduran karya sastra Indonesia untuk tingkat konsumsi anak-anak dan pembaca muda semestinya bisa menjadi salah satu tradisi dalam jagat perbukuan kita. Pada banyak negara lain di dunia, upaya penyaduran karya-karya klasik untuk dapat diapresiasi oleh anak-anak telah menjadi tradisi. Upaya untuk mendekatkan sastra berkualitas kepada anak-anak usia sekolah dasar, telah dimulai sejak dini. Tom Sawyer karya Mark Twain, Oliver Twist karya Charles Dickens, Gulliver’s Travel karya Jonathan Swift, kisah klasik Jepang, adalah beberapa contoh yang bisa dikemukakan. Karya-karya itu telah diceritakan kembali dengan bahasa yang lebih mudah terima dan dipahami oleh peserta didik di tingkat sekolah dasar dan menengah. Saat ini, kita pun dibanjiri oleh karya-karya serupa ini, sedangkan sastra klasik Indonesia belumlah banyak melakukan upaya yang sama. Paparan di atas adalah hal yang melatarbelakangi Penerbit Balai Pustaka mengupayakan penerbitan bukubuku saduran karya klasik Indonesia. Penerbit Balai Pustaka sangat menyadari mendesak dan perlunya segera upaya penyaduran karya-karya sastra klasik Indonesia. Tidak sekadar untuk memenuhi kebutuhan bahan bacaan Pendidikan Bahasa dan Sastra Indonesia secara formal, tapi juga diharapkan bisa dikonsumsi secara luas sebagai bahan bacaan untuk anak dan remaja. Ringkasnya, harapan dari penerbitan seri-seri saduran karya sastra klasik Indonesia ini merupakan bagian dari langkah awal untuk menghasilkan generasi bangsa yang memiliki karakteristik: a) gemar membaca, b) mengenal tradisi,etnik, kebudayaan sendiri dengan baik, c) terbiasa berbeda pendapat, d) menghargai perbedaan, e) mulai mengenal ruh dan budaya suku-suku bangsa lain di Indonesia, tidak sekadar secara kognitif menghapal nyanyian, pakaian, tari dan kesenian belaka, tetapi juga tradisi dan kearifan lokalnya. Harapan ini tentu bukanlah sesuatu yang tak mungkin kita capai. Setiap harapan membutuhkan langkah-langkah realisasi. Demikianlah, jika tidak dimulai dari sekarang dan oleh kita, siapa dan kapan lagi kita menghargai karya sastra negeri sendiri. Selamat membaca!

National hero, Javanese mystic, pious Muslim and leader of the "holy war" against the Dutch between 1825 and 1830, the Yogyakarta prince, Dipanagara (1785-1855, otherwise known as Diponegoro), is pre-eminent in the pantheon of modern Indonesian historical figures. Yet despite instant name recognition in Indonesia, there has never been a full biography of the prince’s life and times based on Dutch and Javanese sources. The Power of Prophecy is a major study which sets Dipanagara’s life history against the context of the turbulent events of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century when the full force of European imperialism hit Indonesia like an Asian tsunami destroying forever Java’s "old order" and propelling the twin forces of Islam and Javanese national identity into a fatal confrontation with the Dutch. This confrontation known as the Java War, in which Dipanagara was defeated and exiled, marked the beginning of the modern colonial period in Indonesia which lasted until the Japanese occupation of 1942-1945. The book presents a detailed analysis of Dipanagara’s pre-war visions and aspirations as a Javanese Ratu Adil ("Just King") based on extensive reading of his autobiography, the Babad Dipanagara as well as a number of other Javanese sources. Dutch and British records, in particularly the Residency Archives of Yogyakarta and Surakarta currently kept in the Indonesian National Archives, provide the backbone of this scholarly work. The book will be read with profit by all those interested in the rise of Western colonial rule in Indonesia, the fate of indigenous cultures in an age of imperialism and the role of Javanese Islam in modern Indonesian history.

Singapore has been taken by many researchers as a fascinating living language policy and planning laboratory. Language and education policy in Singapore has been pivotal not only to the establishment and growth of schooling, but to the very project of nation building. Bhante has students he has never met or taken a retreat who have gone all the way to awakening by using this system at home. Everything is here, and in detail, with many tips and examples, to get the meditator on his way to experiencing awakening in this very life. For more than 40 years Bhante Vimalaramsi researched and practiced many methods without finding any real satisfaction. He went back to the earliest Buddhist teachings, using the Majjhima Nikaya and found what he was seeking. He found the step that had been left out! Find out what that is (hint- to 'tranquilize'). Bhante Vimalaramsi's method of "The 6Rs", is the key to the step he found, which is the "Relax" step. In the suttas, it is called "Tranquilize." Once you learn this practice you can continue by going to Bhante's website and doing online retreats from home or visiting his center one of the retreats around the world he conducts. Bhante Vimalaramsi has been a monk since 1986 and practiced with many of the major Buddhist teachers in Asia.
