Creating schools that are secure, safe, and peaceful is crucial if all pupils are going to benefit from their education. This is especially important for those who might be vulnerable, traumatised and unable to settle into normal school routine. Key to this whole process, though, are our teachers. Unless teachers feel secure, valued and peaceful in their classrooms, they will not be in a position to extend these key qualities to those they teach. But over the last couple of decades, the well-being of teachers - and all support staff engaged in relating to pupils - has been compromised in a number of ways: multiple changes of curriculum, new school structures, changes in conditions of service and pensions, school management styles that reflect anxiety over forthcoming outcomes, results and inspections. The pressures are relentless, and hardly allow any breathing space. In School as a Secure Base, Kevin Street argues that only when staff can find their own security and value, will any efforts to improve pupils' education succeed. Drawing on day-to-day classroom experience, the author provides evidenced ways through which teaching professionals can start to experience internal peace, and so extend this into their classrooms and schools, regardless of external pressures, expectations and demands. He also provides techniques to use with pupils, based on a sound understanding of what can overcome the factors that impede learning. The pupils' learning outcomes will reflect the feelings of attachment, peace and relaxation that these techniques create. Supported by the practical, tried-and-tested techniques the author describes, teachers will be able to find their joy in teaching again, and achieve a healthy and more peaceful balance in their lives, with the result that their schools can become beacons of emotional stability and learning excellence. Who Should Read It? All teachers and support staff who are engaged in the daily process of classroom work throughout all Key Stages. Additionally, head teachers, governors, and local authority advisors will benefit from the insights shared in this book.

Though decades ago school shootings were rare events, today they are becoming normalized. Active shooter drills have become more commonplace as pressure is placed on schools and law enforcement to prevent the next attack. Yet others argue the traumatizing effects of such exercises on the students. Additionally, violence between students continues to remain problematic as bullying pervades children’s lives both at school and at home, leading to negative mental health impacts and, in extreme cases, suicide. Establishing safer school policies, promoting violence prevention programs, building healthier classroom environments, and providing better staff training are all vital for protecting students physically and mentally. The Research Anthology on School Shootings, Peer Victimization, and Solutions for Building Safer Educational Institutions examines the current sources of violence within educational systems, and it offers solutions on how to provide a safer space for both students and educators alike. Broken into four sections, the book examines the causes and impacts that peer victimization has on students and how this can lead to further violence and investigates strategies for detecting the warning signs. The book provides solutions that range from policies and programs that can be established to strategies for teaching nonviolence and promoting coexistence in the classroom. Highlighting a range of topics such as violence prevention, school climate, and bullying, this publication is an ideal reference source for school administrators, law enforcement, teachers, government and state officials, school boards, academicians, researchers, and upper-level students who are intent on stopping the persisting and unfortunate problem that is school violence.

Restoring Safe School Communities written by Brenda Morrison and has been published by Federation Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Education categories.

Restoring Safe School Communities: a whole school response to bullying, violence and alienation introduces a whole school approach to addressing the problems of bullying and violence in schools. Author Brenda Morrison proposes a continuum of responsive and restorative practices for building safe school communities. The first, most proactive, level of practices aims to develop all students' social and emotional competencies, to enable students to resolve their differences in caring and respectful ways. The second level of practices widens the circle of care around the participants. Typically this level of response occurs when the problem has become more protracted or has involved (and affected) a larger number of people, and involves other members of the school community stepping in to assist in the resolution of the conflict or concern. The third and final level of practices involves the participation of an even wider cross-section of the school community, including parents, guardians, social workers, and others who have been affected. This tertiary level of intervention is normally only used for serious incidents within the school. Morrison explains the thinking behind the suggested responses and shows how they can be implemented by practices such as a responsible citizen program and restorative justice circles and conferences.
