Something is terribly wrong with our schools. How did a place that should be a sanctuary for kids becomes a source of fear and intimidation? What has happened? In Creating Emotionally Safe Schools, Jane Bluestein offers a plan to return schools to havens of nurturing and learning. She examines environmental, historical, developmental, psychological, sociological, interpersonal, instructional and administrative factors that contribute to the emotional climate of an educational institution. This is a comprehensive view of what makes a school feel the way it feels, and what we can do to make it feel safe for every child—and every adult—who walks through its doors. Emotional safety has many dimensions, such as: the impact of the family and early development, childhood stress and coping, the changing role of the school, acceptance and emotional support, respect and belonging, temperament and labels, gangs and violence, instructional strategies, learning styles and multiple intelligences, teacher training and support, and the inherent need for a sense of community. The message Jane Bluestein brings is positive: information, programs and solutions are available that can ultimately make our schools inviting, inspiring, and, yes—safe. Includes: Comprehensive list of references and resources Complete index

The authors set out to see if the American school has always been safe. Unfortunately, they found that it has not, that it is confronted in each new generation with a whole new set of threats and dangers. This is a unique book that examines American schools and their safety from the point of view of historical incursions and threats rather than from anecdotal and sometimes questionable information. Through the examination of thousands of documents and incidents, the authors show that the American school has always been subjected to threats from many different sources. Student violence is only a small part of this danger; in fact, the authors show that schools are confronted with many threats besides those presented sporadically by lone violent killers. The authors, at the same time, believe there has been an overreaction to violence that may in itself not be salubrious for the academic programs and moral climates of our schools. After the crisis at Columbine High School, many well-known commentators said that this was the worst crisis ever to take place in an American school. The authors decided to look at the whole topic of school safety in America from the period right after World War II to the present. This unique book is the first to place school safety at the heart of the educational endeavor in America, the first to treat the subject of threats to the school in a broader, historical context, and the first to treat the subject as part of intellectual history. By documenting thousands of instances during the period after World War II through the end of the century, the authors have concluded that the myth of the school as a safe haven has been a comforting, but not always accurate, metaphor. The approach to the subject is from a myriad of perspectives. First, the state of school buildings after the War is discussed. Next, the authors look at juvenile delinquency in the 1950s. Then they put school fires in context, followed by a chapter on school bus accidents and other devastating events from nature. In Civil Rights, Uncivil Schools they discuss the deleterious impact of the century's most important social movement on schools. In the creative chapter, The Demise of Discipline, they demonstrate, through research, ways in which discipline in the schools has been eroded. In A Decadent Counterculture they assess the threats to schools by sex, drugs, and gangs. In Terror Comes to School they show that many violent intrusions began in the 1970s and earlier, well before the 1990s. The concluding chapter, The Paradox of the Clinton Era brings the history to the end of the century. The Postscript discusses new ways of looking at threats to school safety.

School safety does not have to be expensive, but it does have to be a priority. Every school district can make the proactive decision to create a culture of safety in their schools, a culture that demonstrates through its active campus safety teams, proactive threat assessment teams, realistic all-hazards drills and comprehensive training for students, faculty, staff and stakeholders that school violence in any form will not be tolerated. Throughout this book you will be exposed to safety innovations and security technologies. There is no doubt that some of these measures, when applied to the correct situation, can have a positive impact; however, creating a comprehensive safety initiative is always more about instilling values than about spending money. School administrators, teachers, students and parents must be committed to implementing necessary school safeguards from the physical design of the facility to its day-to-day management of safety and security concerns. A comprehensive and proactive school safety system must be grounded in actionable threat assessment teams, pragmatic school safety plans, realistic crisis response drills and sustained target hardening tactics. This 4th edition of the award-winning School Safety 101 places a renewed emphasis on the importance of threat assessment and identifying and responding to early warning signs prior to an attack. According to research 78% of all school mass shooters were current or recent former students from the school and that 68% of the time there were significant and obvious warning signs that were missed by schools, law enforcement and mental health professionals. School districts must place a renewed emphasis on actionable and comprehensive threat assessment teams that directly correlate threats with specific services and sanctions which can mitigate the possibility of a school shooting. This updated edition also presents familiar chapters on school safety preparation and response, including the importance of proactive campus safety teams remaining vigilant in conducting school safety audits and crisis response planning and practice that meets each specific school's needs and realistically represents the dangers schools face in the 21st century. The 4th Edition of School Safety 101 also presents new research from Mass Shootings: Six Steps to Survival and highlights the ESCAPE model, an easy-to-remember six-step process developed from actual actions taken and decisions made by individuals who survived these terrible attacks. The ESCAPE Model can be taught in an age-appropriate level to children of all ages, and when combined with basic pre-planning and civilian situational awareness, can potentially save lives in the event of an attack.
