Local road practitioners across the country play a critical role in addressing crash risks at the local level and may be able to identify the specific or unique conditions that contribute to crashes within their jurisdictions. The Local Road Safety Plan (LRSP) offers a foundation for consensus and focus. It defines key emphasis areas and strategies that impact local rural roads and provides a framework to accomplish safety enhancements at the local level. The LRSP helps communities take a proactive stance in reducing and preventing local road fatalities and injuries. This book guides the development of an LRSP. It provides information to local practitioners about identifying stakeholders and partnerships needed to build support, tools to analyse data, and resources to identify safety issues and select safety strategies.

How To Make Two Lane Rural Roads Safer written by Ruediger Lamm and has been published by Witpress this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Technology & Engineering categories.

When accidents happen, drivers are blamed for the mishap. When drivers consistently fail at certain locations, it then becomes obvious that the problem lies not with them, but with the geometry of the road itself. Because accidents are not evenly distributed throughout the road network, locations with high accident rates are a clear indication that there are other factors involved, besides driver error, which are characterized by the road itself. In most countries, two-lane rural roads make up about 90 percent of rural networks and they account for over 60 percent of highway fatalities worldwide, approximately 500,000 people per year. The methodology described in this book will support the achievement of quantified measures of: design consistency; operating speed consistency; and, driving dynamic consistency. The safety criteria are then combined into an overall safety module for a simplified general overview of the safety evaluation process. The authors also encourage the coordination of safety concerns with important economic, environmental and aesthetic considerations. This book will be an invaluable aid to educators, students, consultants, highway engineers and administrators, as well as scientists in the fields of highway design and traffic safety engineering.

"This document is part 2 of the 'Austroads guide to road safety'. It is intended as a guide to the process of strategy development and evaluation. It outlines options for strategy development and the value of a 'vision' in driving strategy development. Strategies are of necessity collaborative enterprises, involving a range of stakeholders and partners. A number of information sources are necessary to define problems, including crash and hospital databases, and scientific studies of specific issues and general countermeasures which may affect a wide range of crash types. Countermeasure selection should depend on their proven effectiveness, likely benefits in relation to cost, public acceptability and the jurisdiction's capacity to deliver them. Innovative measures should be closely evaluated. The value of setting targets is discussed, together with the appropriate performance indicators and analysis methods. Advice is provided regarding the implementation process and the essential contribution of monitoring and evaluation is explained."--Summary, opposite t.p.
