Die Leute bangen um ihr touristisches Aushängeschild, bis die junge Munderin Julia die Bauern der Safranzunft zu einer Erkundungsreise in den Iran, dem Safranparadies, ermuntert. Sie kann dabei ihre heimliche, jung entflammte Liebe, nämlich Râmin wieder treffen, während die Bauern in diesem weltweit grössten Anbaugebiet neue fruchtbare Sorten entdecken. Diese pflanzen sie nicht nur auf bisherigen Äckern des Bergdorfes an: Rundum auf allen Feldern erblüht bald das begehrte rote Gold dank iranischer Entwicklungshilfe. Gleichzeitig zeigt sich das Dorf gegenüber den iranischen Arbeitskräften reserviert. Im Strudel des entfesselten Safranrausches geraten Râmin und Julia in zwielichtige Verwicklungen und Intrigen. Ein pensionierter Lokaljournalist will das soziale Leben mit seinen kollektiven Gütern vor gierigem Gewinnstsreben bewahren. Doch mutlos sehen die Bewohner zu, wie der korrupte Zunftmeister die Gemeinschaftsgüter der Safranzunft an eine Firma verhökert. Mit deren Gunst würde er beinahe seine Karriere als Walliser Staatsrat krönen, käme ihm nicht die mutige Jungmanagerin Behnâz in die Quere. Sie hinterfragt seine Machenschaften und zahlt dafür einen hohen Preis. Die Geschichte rund um den Safran gibt Einblicke in Politik, Tradition und Glauben des dörflichen Lebens. Kulturen treffen aufeinander mit gegenseitiger Vorsicht, Abwehr, Beeinflussung und Verbindung. Anspielungen und Parallelen zur beschriebenen Region sind auch anderswo möglich.
