Türkiye'de Sabatay Sevi ve dönmelik en merak edilen ve en çok üzerinde efsane üretilen konuların başında gelir. 17. yüzyılın ikinci yarısında mesihim diye ortaya çıkarak, bütün dünyadaki Yahudiler'i heyecanlandıran Sabatay Sevi, Osmanlı yönetiminin konuşmalarını boş sözler olarak nitelendirip, sorguya alması üzerine Müslüman olarak kellesini kurtarabilmişti. Mehmed ismini alan Sabatay Sevi'nin bazı taraftarları da efendilerinin izinden giderek Müslüman oldular. Böylece görünüşte Müslüman, gizli olarak da Yahudiliği sürdüren ve "dönme" adı verilen bir topluluk ortaya çıktı. Ülkemizde günümüze kadar gelen bu topluluk hakkında birçok şehir efsanesi üretildi. Komplo teorileri o kadar ileri gitmiştir ki, Osmanlı arşivlerinde Sabatay Sevi hakkındaki belgelerin yokedildiği iddiaları ileri sürülmüştür. Bu kitap bu iddiaların doğru olmadığını ortaya koyan bir araştırmadır. Sabatay Sevi ve Sabataycılık, öncelikle Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nun bir meselesiydi ve Türk arşivleri kullanılmadan yazılacak her çalışma eksik kalmaya mahkûmdu. Bu araştırmada arşivlerde ilk defa bulunan Osmanlı belgeleri ışığında dönmeliğin kurucusu Sabatay Sevi'nin hikâyesi anlatılmıştır.
