St. George is a figure that bridges many worlds. At the heart of the myths and legends surrounding this English icon lies the story of an early Christian martyr persecuted by the Roman Empire around the third century AD. But England is only one country to have adopted this legendary soldier saint as their patron. Other countries including Germany, Armenia, Hungary, Portugal, Catalonia and Malta have all claimed him as their own. The cult of St. George is astonishingly widespread with churches being dedicated to him in Ethiopia, Egypt, Greece and France. His heroic struggle and victory against the dragon can be interpreted as representing the bravery of an individual Christian or as the eternal battle been good and evil. But closer examination of the cult of St. George yields unexpected results. There are clear parallels between his legendary battle and that of earlier pre-Christian heroes such as Perseus and Beowulf. St. George is also identified with the Islamic hero Al Khidr who is said to have discovered the fountain of youth. He has been associated with the coming of spring and has functioned as fertility symbol and been closely linked to the Green Man of Pre-Christian Myth. St. George has also acted as a symbol of chastity and served as a healing saint. His flag has been appropriated by the far right but in recent times come to identify a multi-cultural England. 'fascinating...Well written and meandering delightfully, Morgan held my attention more than I had anticipated' - Bob Rickard, Fortean Times

St George's Day has become a topic of debate as more and more organizations promote celebrations on 23 April and more people wave the flag of St George to proclaim their allegiance and identity. But who was St George? How did this Near Eastern martyr become England's patron saint and an icon of English culture? And what is his relevance for today's secular, multicultural England? New research reveals that from the third century St George was revered as a healer, protector of women and the poor and patron of agriculture and metal-working more than a military dragon-slayer. Discover the origin of the cross of St George and the roles of Richard I, Edward III and Henry VIII in making St George the patron saint of England. With a foreword by Professor Emeritus Dan Brown, this richly-illustrated celebration of English culture shows how St George can be reinterpreted for our times while remaining true to our English heritage. St George can be enlisted in the cause of ecology, the campaign against FGM, and the fight to end modern slavery and resettle refugees. English yet international, revered both by Christians and Muslims, St George is a multicultural figure who symbolizes universal values.

Pope Gelasius, who canonized St George in 494, described him as one of those 'whose names are rightly reverenced among us, but whose actions are known only to God.' The story of England's Patron Saint is so encased in myth and legend that the truth of his remarkable life is unknown to the great majority of us. In many ways the attitude of the English, reflects the many contradictions in the story of St George and the growth of his legend worldwide. A Christian martyr, murdered by a Roman emperor in Palestine, he is a legendary dragon-slayer who saved a virgin princess from sacrifice - but not before insisting her entire town converts to Christianity. Yet he is also the model for mythical Islamic hero Al Khidr. He is the Patron Saint of England but never set foot on English soil and the legend of his knightly deeds came from the imagination of a bishop in Italy. In recent years, through national pride more than religious fervour, the popularity of St George's Day has risen sharply, with more parades, parties and pub get-togethers than we saw in the latter half of the twentieth century.

The image of St. George—atop his horse, lance plunged halfway into a dragon’s body—is so familiar to us that we take for granted what a long history it has had. As Samantha Riches demonstrates in this book, St. George is easily one of the most transported icons across cultures, and his history is the history of myth writ large. Traveling in Georgia, Greece, Malta, Belgium, Lebanon, Palestine, Ethiopia, Estonia, and many other places, she offers a fascinating look at one of the most popular mythical figures of all time. Riches traces St. George in his various appearances and guises across a wealth of religions and traditions. From Eastern Orthodox, Coptic, and Western European Christian traditions, she follows his trail into Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Candomblé, and the many pagan systems where he has functioned a symbol of nature, springtime, and healing. Exploring the innumerable ways artists, poets, and painters have engaged his mythical import, she shows him to be at the center of many political divisions, where he has been used to advance one agenda or another. Drawing together many aspects of the cult of St. George, Riches provides a fascinating history of an enduring icon.

The war is real. From the creation, good men and women of all nations have sought diligently for the God of heaven, that they might align themselves with Him against evil in all its forms. George is such a man. After a decade in the Roman army, bringing the blessings of peace and liberty to many people, he joins the Emperor's personal guard. Secure in his faith yet humbled by the vast responsibilities entrusted to him, George is shocked when the specter of Christian persecution arises in the imperial council. How will he answer the demand that he renounce his faith in God and worship the Roman gods? What price will his choice require of him? How will his example influence others for good or evil? Where is God's justice and mercy in all this confusion? Join with George on his journey of faith and self-discovery as he prepares himself to be faithful to God and to the principles of truth and righteousness wherever they are found and whatever the sacrifice that is required.Historically, George was born around 275 AD, most likely in Lydda, Palestine. He died on Good Friday, April 23, 303 AD. He was executed at the inception of the final and most severe state-sanctioned Christian persecution in Roman history. During the 28 years of his life, George set an example so amazing that his goodness and memory have endured. He was a military officer who was loved by the people he conquered. The records of his military successes and powerful witness of faith have largely been destroyed, but what remains recounts a life that inspired many to faith in Christ. He is somewhat of an exception among great men and saints in that he is known and respected by Christians, Jews and Muslims throughout the Middle East, from Africa to Asia, and in Europe. He bent his will fully to their common deity, the God of Abraham, the one true and living God, in defiance of the Roman Emperor. His fame and popularity grew steadily, even after he was executed for his faith. George has been revered for his military conquests, his liberation of the oppressed, and his uncompromising fidelity to Almighty God. Some 800 years after his death, many Christians and non-Christians alike still honored him as a saint who brought peace, prosperity, and religious tolerance to their people. His fame was so enduring that the Crusaders of the late 11th and early 12th centuries met in the Holy Land and collectively adopted the banner and colors of St. George, a red cross on a white field. Upon their return from the crusades, these soldiers romanticized the legend of St. George with a symbolic account of his mythical battle with a dragon for the life of a princess and access to the water of life, which had no prior historical reference. He is often depicted in art on a horse with a spear, above a dragon. He is the Patron Saint of the following nations: Aragon, Bulgaria, Catalonia, Egypt, England, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, India, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Lithuania, Malta, Palestine, Portugal, Serbia, Syria, Russia and Ukraine, among others. The historical evidence regarding the details of St. George's life is somewhat limited. Yet it is clear that he was a true saint, and the type of person who lived by every word of God. God intends for all His children to live by His word, studying and pondering how each passage, principle, and truth might help us to understand our own experiences in life. Each principle of righteousness and holiness is not so much a mystery as it is a puzzle. We are invited to work at them and solve them as we each gather experiences from day to day. It has been said the gospel is so simple that a child could not err therein, and yet it is so profound that it can never be fully comprehended in mortality. The mysteries of God are not secret, but they are sacred. They are available to all who will honor them.
