Excerpt from Missionary Methods: St. Paul's or Ours, a Study of the Church in the Four Provinces In no branch of human knowledge has there been a more lively increase of the spirit or research during the past few years than in the study of Theology. Many points of doctrine have been passing afresh through the crucible; "re-statement" is a popular cry and, in some directions, a real requirement of the age; the additions to our actual materials, both as regards ancient manuscripts and archaeological discoveries, have never before been so great as in recent years; linguistic knowledge has advanced with the fuller possibilities provided by the constant addition of more data for comparative study, cuneiform inscriptions have been deciphered and forgotten peoples, records, and even tongues, revealed anew as the outcome of diligent, skilful and devoted study. Scholars have specialized to so great an extent that many conclusions are less speculative than they were, while many more aids are thus available for arriving at a general judgment; and, in some directions, at least, the time for drawing such general conclusions, and so making practical use of such specialized research, seems to have come, or to be close at hand. Many people, therefore, including the large mass of the parochial clergy and students, desire to have in an accessible form a review of the results of this flood of new light on many topics that are of living and vital interest to the Faith; and, at the same time, "practical" questions - by which is really denoted merely the application of faith to life and to the needs of the day have certainly lost none of their interest, but rather loom larger than ever if the Church is adequately to fulfil her Mission. It thus seems an appropriate time for the issue of a new series of theological works, which shall aim at presenting a general survey of the present position of thought and knowledge in various branches of the wide field which is included in the study of divinity. Excerpt from Paul the Apostle: Pioneer Missionary to the Heathen World Perhaps no character, in history, save that Of the Nazarene carpenter, lends itself so satisfactorily to the purpose of the biographer as that Of the Apostle Paul. Consequently the polemic and the irenic, the Protestant and the Catholic, -men Of every shade Of Christian faith - have undertaken to bring out in strong relief the titanic and varied qualities of this majestic hero. The author Of this volume, however, seeks to pre sent the subject more fully than is done by the briefer biographers, yet more succinctly than Farrar and the rest of the voluminous writers. With the purpose of supplying the manifest need of such a treatise, the writer has given us this book. He has rendered very attractive his accurate and trustworthy narrative by invoking the power Of a vivid imagination, a deep and warm feeling, a pronounced human interest, and a lucid style. Many missions to the Jewish people, such as Jews for Jesus, use Romans 1:16 as a proof text to encourage the evangelisation of the Jewish people as a priority: 'to the Jew first, and then to the Greek' (Jewish Missional Priority). Is this interpretation of the text legitimate? After considering when this priority first appeared, the author exposes and evaluates the arguments commonly used to promote it. His thorough exegesis of Romans 1:16-17 ultimately resolves the question. He takes the opportunity to explore some possible eschatological implications developed from Romans 9-11 and the parables of Jesus. Will the first also be the last?

Please see the description for this title below. But first... Our promise: All of our works are complete and unabridged. As with all our titles, we have endeavoured to bring you modern editions of classic works. This work is not a scan, but is a completely digitized and updated version of the original. Unlike, many other publishers of classic works, our publications are easy to read. You won't find illegible, faded, poor quality photocopies here. Neither will you find poorly done OCR versions of those faded scans either with illegible "words" that contain all kinds of strange characters like , %, &, etc. Our publications have all been looked over and corrected by the human eye. We can't promise perfection, but we're sure gonna try! Our goal is to bring you high quality Christian publications at rock bottom prices. Description: I am aware that in the following pages I have made many statements and offered some criticisms upon our modern missionary methods which are calculated to arouse controversy, but I earnestly hope that no such statement or criticism will be allowed to obscure the real object of my inquiry. I have instituted comparisons between the Apostle's method and that of our own day, simply in order to enforce the lessons which, I suppose, we may learn from his practice. If I have been mistaken in my statements concerning our modern methods, my error can be easily corrected by many witnesses. But what is of the first importance is that we should gain a true understanding of the real character of the Apostle's practice and of the principles upon which it was based. The questions which I have raised are questions of profound importance to-day. We are beginning to study seriously the principles upon which Foreign Missions should be conducted. The time is ripe for a reconsideration of our methods. In any such reconsideration, the study of the methods employed by the greatest of all the Teachers of the Gentiles should take the first place. My most sincere and grateful thanks are due to the Rev. Father Waggett, S.S.J.E., for valuable assistance in forwarding the publication of this: book, and to Dr. Garfield Williams of Agra, the Rev. V. S. Azariah of the Tinnevelly Native Missionary Society, and Dr. Huntly, of the Presbyterian Mission in Agra for many kind and searching criticisms and much helpful encouragement and advice. But none of these must be held responsible for any opinions here expressed. My thanks are also due to the Editor of the Church Times, for permission to reprint the two articles at the end of the volume.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1894 edition. Excerpt: ..."Am I then become your enemy because I have told you the truth?" 2 Such feelings of resentment, however, did not find a voice till after the Apostle's departure; while he was present, " all showed themselves zealous in the good cause";3 his sermons overmastered their minds; the generosity, nay, the tenderness, of his love for them touched the very depths of their hearts; they forgot the blunt plainness of his language, overwhelmed by the truths with which it palpitated, --this Heavenly Jerusalem on High,4 the Israel of God,6 with Jesus so marvellously depicted that His Cross seemed to rise up before their very eyes.6 These easily moved, but at the same time sincere and upright Christians, returned at once to the calm and purity of the Faith. Later on Paul bore witness to their high character and how they once more " were obedient to the truth and were running the race in the eagerness of their fervor."7 He profited by their good intentions to organize that collection destined for the Church at Jerusalem which soon we shall find occupying a great deal of his attention and involving an additional care in his ministry.8 Paul left Phrygian territory at the very point where two years earlier the Spirit of Jesus had risen as a barrier between him and the Province of Asia. There was no longer any interdict lying over this beautiful and populous region, and he was free to execute the plans he had conceived when passing through Ephesus, --plans of evangelizing that city. The volcanic mountains which form Phrygia's western frontier send out toward the Archipelago several offshoots, between which flow the Hermus and Meander.1 It was the latter of these valleys through which passed the main highway leading from the...
