In this pioneering study Paul D. Kroeber examines the history of an array of important syntactic constructions in the Salish language family. This group of some twenty-three languages, centrally located in the Northwest Coast and Plateau Regions, is noted for its intriguing differences from European languages, including the possible irrelevance of a noun/verb distinction to grammatical structure and the existence of distinctive systems of articles, which also often function as marks of subordination. ø Kroeber draws on and analyzes data from a wide range of textual and other sources. This book treats aspects of the syntax of Halkomelem, a Salish language spoken in southwestern British Columbia, specifically those constructions which involve objects, and seeks to accomplish two goals. First, it provides natural language fodder for the debate concerning the nature of grammatical relations and their place in syntactic theory. Second, by showing that Halkomelem draws from a familiar class of universal constructions and organizes its syntax around some simple and common parameters, the author has brought the Salish languages, which due to their phonological and morphological complexity seemed particularly fearsome, into cross-linguistic perspective.

Excerpt from Noun Reduplication in Comox: A Salish Language of Vancouver Island One of the most characteristic grammatical processes of a group of Northwest Pacific Coast languages, embracing the Tsimshian, kwakiutl-nootka, Salish, and Chemakum linguistic stocks, is initial reduplication, employed in both noun and verb forms to indicate a variety of grammatical concepts, chiefly those of plurality, distribution, and iteration. The Salish languages in particular are known to make exuberant use of reduplication for grammatical purposes, but the subject, which seems to bristle with irregularities and intricacies of detail, has never been adequately treated for any of the numerous dialects of the stock. Coeur d’Alene, also known as Snchitsu’umshtsn, is a Southern Interior (Idaho, USA) Salish language. This work presents a formal account of the basic clause structure of this polysynthetic language within the tradition of Minimalism and Distributed Morphology. The work arrives at an account of the basic clause structure and an articulation of the left periphery of Coeur d’Alene. In addition, an account of lexical affixation is presented. Thus providing the first formal account of the language and adding to our understanding of Coeur d’Alene, Salish languages, and languages of the world more generally. In addition, the work draws attention to the excellent scholarship of Gladys Reichard, whose work has been crucial in any study of the Coeur d’Alene language in the last ninety years. Using Reichard’s unpublished manuscripts and field notes, as well as consultation with the Coeur d’Alene Language Program, the work draws on a corpus of data that demonstrates the value of legacy material and illustrates the importance of language documentation, maintenance, and preservation to linguistic inquiry.
