Dentro del proyecto PAPIME se propuso la elaboración de un libro que reuniera los diversos enfoques y temas que debe abordar el profesional de enfermería para el estudio de la salud familiar, de esta manera se comenzó la búsqueda de material idóneo que sirviera para la producción de diversos capítulos. La insuficiente definición actual del papel de la enfermera en atención primaria y salud familiar queda patente ante la inexistencia de protocolos clínicos específicos e indicadores derivados de ellos que le permitan planificar, gestionar y evaluar de forma adecuada a las familias. Por eso, el desarrollo de la formación de enfermeras en atención primaria, salud familiar y comunitaria juega un papel fundamental ahora y en los próximos años. La salud familiar se considera como un enfoque conceptual y metodológico que posibilita la transformación de servicios, desarrollo de equipos de salud y aumento de la atención integral efectiva a los usuarios y sus familias. El reto de los profesionales, como la enfermera, es el compromiso con la innovación y el cambio en la prestación de servicios de salud en cobertura y calidad de atención. La atención familiar y comunitaria es aquella que presta un conjunto de servicios profesionales que, desde una situación de proximidad a la población, enfoca su actuación desde una triple perspectiva: personal, familiar y colectiva, con una orientación estratégica hacia la mejora de la salud a través del abordaje de los problemas y necesidades existentes. La atención familiar y comunitaria se desarrolla de manera principal en la atención primaria a la salud (APS) y constituye su elemento nuclear de intervención.
