Karen Ann Kennedy's earliest experience in church is going to a Catholic mass with a childhood friend. She doesn't understand why church has to be so imposing and frightening. It isn't until much later that she realizes that there are other types of believers in other types of churches. Feeling that something is missing from her own life, Kennedy spends many years searching. But she doesn't even know what she is looking for until she is guided to a little church on the beach. Her first Sunday at Ocean City Baptist Church changes her life forever. As a child, Karen Ann Kennedy wanted to be a stand-up comedian, and her comedic skill certainly shows in Salvation by the Sea. Her writing is sometimes gentle, sometimes bold, but always funny. She is ready to take new Christians by the hand and let them know that "we're in this together." Kennedy offers advice and words of encouragement for other new believers as they start their Christian lives. Her salvation story is triumphant and her guidance comforting to anyone who knows, or wants to know, what it is like to be forever changed by the Word of God.

This dissertation comprises a synchronic study of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century Icelandic literary representations of religious revelations at sea in five Icelandic sagas: Bárðar saga Snæfellsáss, Eiríks saga rauða, Flóamanna saga, Grænlendinga saga, and Ljósvetninga saga. This dissertation explores the complex of motifs that comprise sailing, divine revelation, and social or spiritual salvation that appear in discrete episodes related to maritime activities in these five sagas. Motifs of sailing and salvation were emblematic of the concerns and experiences of Christians in Iceland in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, and therefore relevant for both saga composer and saga audience. Biblical stories of the sea, like Moses' parting of the Red Sea, Jonah's encounter with a whale prior to his proselytizing efforts in Nineveh, and Jesus' calming of the storm in the Sea of Galilee, would have been particularly attractive to those whose livelihoods depended on sea travel in the North Atlantic. This dissertation considers a series of mentions of the mundane realities of sea travel through the lens of vernacular religion to understand how oral secular histories are woven together with Biblical narratives and folk knowledge of fishing conditions, rowers' songs, and sailing regulations to produce literary histories from which a maritime audience could find moral and theological lessons. The five sagas, as case studies, demonstrate how Iceland's medieval writers drew upon local understandings of the sea and related maritime folklore in a process to localize Christian narrative traditions to familiar settings within Iceland's written history and thereby create a vernacular Christian understanding of the past that could resonate with contemporary Icelandic audiences.

Today Gospel has been twisted in a broad field. Faith in Jesus Christ must be built up on the full revelation of God. However, most evangelists do not equip well before ministering. They lack the structure of faith of the Scriptures. The consequence is that both shepherds and sheep are not walking on the way of truth. Actually, they are falling away. Because of lacking of the foundation of faith based on the full words of God, it is not surprised that even popular evangelists deny that Jesus Christ is the only way of salvation. Let’s tremble before the Word of God and seek Him. John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Isaiah 66:5 “Hear the word of the LORD, ye that tremble at his word; Your brethren that hated you, that cast you out for my name’s sake, said, Let the LORD be glorified: but he shall appear to your joy and they shall be ashamed.”
