Saly Mayer, ein erfolgreicher und international tatiger Fabrikant aus St. Gallen, stellte in den 1930er und 1940er Jahren seine ganze Lebenskraft in den ehrenamtlichen Dienst an den vom Nationalsozialismus bedrohten Juden - zuerst als Sekretar bzw. Prasident des Dachverbandes der judischen Gemeinden in der Schweiz, ab 1940 dann als Vertreter des American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JOINT) fur die Juden in den vom Deutschen Reich besetzten Gebieten. Mit dieser Funktion ubernahm er im Kampf gegen die nationalsozialistische Verfolgungs- und Vernichtungspolitik eine wichtige, aberletztlich unlosbare Aufgabe. In der Schweiz geriet er aufgrund seines pragmatischen Verhaltens, das Machbare unter den herrschenden Verhaltnissen zu erreichen, zu einem umstrittenen Akteur. Seine Tatigkeit war bald nur noch mit halblegalen oder illegalen Methoden moglich, indem er hinter der Fassade des gesetzestreuen Burgers die schweizerischen und amerikanischen Behorden umging und schliesslich in direkten Verhandlungen 1944 auch die SS tauschte. Im letzten Kriegsjahr und nach Kriegsende wurde er im Auftrag des JOINT zu einem Mittelsmann bei der Finanzierung der illegalen Einwanderung europaischer Juden ins britische Palastina.

The volume skillfully illuminates the daily lives of a diverse range of Jews who suffered under Nazism, their coping strategies, and their efforts to assess the implications for the present and future of the persecution they faced during this period. Volume II begins with Kristallnacht in 1938 and continues through the Jewish flight out of Germany, the onset of World War II, the forced relocation of the Jews of Europe to the East, and the formation of Jewish ghettos, particularly in Poland. The twelve chapters, divided into four parts, track the trajectory of German expansion and anti-Jewish policies chronologically, attesting to a clear progression of persecution over time and space. Jürgen Matthäus fills this critical gap by showcasing the highly insightful reports compiled during the first half of World War II by two Geneva-based offices: those of Richard Lichtheim representing the Jewish Agency for Palestine and of Gerhart Riegner’s World Jewish Congress office. Since the first days of war, Lichtheim’s predictions of Jewish dead ran in the millions and increased progressively with the rising tide of Nazi rule over Europe. His and Riegner’s perceptions of German anti-Jewish policy resulted from shared goals and personal experiences as well as from their bureaus’ range of functions and the massive problems that impacted the gathering and communicating of information on the unfolding Holocaust in German-controlled Europe. In summer 1942 the Germans escalated the systematic deportations of Jews from Western and Northern Europe to the extermination camps. In most of the countries under German control, the occupying forces initially focused on arresting foreign and stateless Jews, thereby securing the cooperation of local authorities. However, before long the entire Jewish population was targeted for deportation. This volume documents the parallels and differences in the persecution of Jews in occupied Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France in the period from summer 1942 to liberation; it records the implementation of the systematic deportation and murder of Jews from Western and Northern Europe, and it also records the rescue of more than 5,000 Danish Jews. In letters and diary entries the persecuted Jews describe their attempts to flee, life in hiding, the transit camps, and deportation transports that often took several days. In Westerbork camp in the occupied Netherlands, Bob Cahen, himself an inmate, recorded in his diary the arrival in the camp of 17,000 Jews from across the Netherlands in October 1942: ‘People arrived here herded like livestock. Some were buried beneath their luggage, others without any possessions at all, not even properly dressed. Women in poor health who had been hauled out of bed in thin nightgowns, children in undergarments and barefoot, the elderly, the ill, the infirm – more and more new people came to the camp.’ The sources in the volume show how the perpetrators attempted to dupe their victims regarding the destination of the transports, and how Jewish organizations attempted to alleviate the suffering of the deportees.
