"[W]hat is true of Rwanda is true in each of us; we all share in Africa." -- L'Harmattan "[This novel] comes closer than have many political scientists or historians to trying to understand why this small country... sank in such appalling violence." -- Radio France International In April of 1994, nearly a million Rwandans were killed in what would prove to be one of the swiftest, most terrifying killing sprees of the 20th century. In Murambi, The Book of Bones, Boubacar Boris Diop comes face to face with the chilling horror and overwhelming sadness of the tragedy. Now, the power of Diop's acclaimed novel is available to English-speaking readers through Fiona Mc Laughlin's crisp translation. The novel recounts the story of a Rwandan history teacher, Cornelius Uvimana, who was living and working in Djibouti at the time of the massacre. He returns to Rwanda to try to comprehend the death of his family and to write a play about the events that took place there. As the novel unfolds, Cornelius begins to understand that it is only our humanity that will save us, and that as a writer, he must bear witness to the atrocities of the genocide. From the novel: "If only by the way people are walking, you can see that tension is mounting by the minute. I can feel it almost physically. Everyone is running or at least hurrying about. I meet more and more passersby who seem to be walking around in circles. There seems to be another light in their eyes. I think of the fathers who have to face the anguished eyes of their children and who can't tell them anything. For them, the country has become an immense trap in the space of just a few hours. Death is on the prowl. They can't even dream of defending themselves. Everything has been meticulously prepared for a long time: the administration, the army, and the [militia] are going to combine forces to kill, if possible, every last one of them."

A powerful and profoundly moving novel of the civil war in Rwanda, told by men, women, and children on both sides Speak Rwanda by Julian R. Pierce marks the arrival of one of the most mesmerizing novels of the year. In vivid, sometimes horrifying, balanced, complex, and utterly believable chapters, it traces the linked lives of several characters--Hutu and Tutsi, soldiers and civilians, mothers, politicians, nurses, herdsmen, and orphaned children--as they try to survive one of the most violent and deeply disturbing acts of genocide since the Second World War. Through the course of the novel, some live and some die: by the end, the reader is fully involved in the lives of these people, and begins to see a faint glimmer of hope and the promise of peace.

Rwanda Yesterday written by Patricia Bamurangirwa and has been published by Troubador Publishing Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-23 with History categories.

Patricia Bamurangirwa was born in Rwanda in 1949. The outbreak of the civil war in the 1960s ended her education, and her family fled from Rwanda, first as refugees to the Congo and Uganda and later to Tanzania and Kenya. Deprived of an education and stable upbringing, Patricia has become interested in the reason behind the wars and violence Rwanda and its people suffered. She decided to write this book to set the record straight regarding the common myths about the history of Rwanda and its people. This book is divided into three parts. Starting with the formation of Rwanda, it shows how the tribes, Banyarwanda Tutsi, Twa and Hutu lived in harmony under the rule of a king. It then examine Rwanda under colonialism, when the Belgiums devised an ethnic system that raised the Hutus above the Tutsis and laid the groundwork of the future tensions in the country. Finally, the last part examines Rwanda as it entered the period of the 1994 genocide when over 20% of the population was killed and the world stood by. The book does not simply narrate events in Rwanda’s history, but seeks to provide some clarity on the cause rather than the effects of the current state of affairs. It is not a book simply about the genocide, but a look at how the country’s history has shaped the events of modern times. It is important to understand Rwanda’s successive periods of history, in order to understand today’s Rwanda, and this book presents a fresh perspective on the country and its people.
