The central theme of this book is an under-studied link between the canon of Francis Bacon’s and Isaac Newton’s scientific and philosophical thought and Samuel Johnson’s critical approach that can be traced in a textual study of his literary works. The interpretive framework adopted here encourages familiarity with the history and philosophy of science, confirming that the history of ideas is an entirely human construct that constitutes an integral part of intellectual history. This further endorses the argument that intermediality can only be of benefit to future research into the richness of Johnson’s literary style. As perceived boundaries are crossed between conventionally distinct communication media, the profile of Johnson that emerges is of a writer of passionate intelligence who was able to combine a pragmatic approach to knowledge with flights of imagination as a true artist.

Idealism, Pragmatism, and Feminism provides an account of the life and writings of Ella Lyman Cabot (1866-1934), a woman who received formal training, but not formal recognition, in the field of classical American philosophy. It highlights the themes of idealism, pragmatism and feminism as they emerged in the course of career as an educational reformer and ethicist that spanned nearly four decades. Cabot's writings, developed in graduate seminars at Harvard and Radcliffe at the turn of the century complement, and in many cases anticipate, the thinking of the "fathers" of the American philosophical cannon: Charles Sanders Peirce, Josiah Royce, William James, and John Dewey. Her formal philosophical writing focuses on the concepts of growth, creativity, and the moral imagination—a fact that is especially interesting given that these concepts are developed by a woman who faced serious obstacles in her personal and intellectual development. Indeed, these concepts are not merely philosophical ideals, but practical tools that Ella Lyman Cabot used to negotiate the gender roles and intellectual marginalization that she faces at the turn of the century. The discipline of philosophy was very slow to incorporate the insights of women into its self-definition. An analysis of the writings of Ella Lyman Cabot reveals this point, but also the pointed ways in which she sought to express her genuinely creative insights.

Popular readings of Johnson as a dictionary-maker often see him as a writer who both laments and attempts to control the state of the language. Lynda Mugglestone looks at the range of Johnson's writings on, and the complexity of his thinking about, language and lexicography. She shows how these reveal him probing problems not just of meaning and use but what he considered the related issues of control, obedience, and justice, as well as the difficulties of power when exerted over the 'sea of words'. She examines his attitudes to language change, loan words, spelling, history, and authority, describing, too, the evolution of his ideas about the nature, purpose, and methods of lexicography, and shows how these reflect his own wider thinking about politics, culture, and society. The book offers a careful reassessment of Johnson's lexicographical practice, examining in detail his commitment to evidence, and the uses to which this might be put. Dictionary-making, for Johnson, came to be seen as a long and difficult voyage round the world of the English language. While such images play their own role in lexicographical tradition, Johnson would, as this volume explores, also make them very much his own in a range of distinctive, and illuminating, ways. Johnson's metaphors invite us to consider-and reconsider-the processes by which a dictionary might be made and the kind of destination it might seek, as well as the state of language that might be reached by such endeavours. For Johnson, where the dictionary-maker might go, and what should be accomplished along the way, can often seem to raise pertinent and perhaps troubling questions. Lynda Mugglestone's generous, wide-ranging account casts new light on Johnson's life in language and provides an engaging reassessment of his impact on English culture, the making of dictionaries, and their role in a nation's identity.

"The reader will find that I combine hearty enthusiasm for the philosophical traditions of my country with sharp partial disagreement with nearly all their representatives. My effort throughout my career has been to think about philosophical, that is, essentially a priori or metaphysical, issues, using the history of ideas as a primary resource. "This is the second of two volumes dealing with the history of philosophy, especially of metaphysics. The first, Insights and Oversights of Great Thinkers, discusses some thirty European philosophers, from Democritus to Wittgenstein and Merleau-Ponty. In both volumes I try to learn and teach truth about reality by arguing, in a fashion, with those who in the past have sought such truth." — Charles Hartshorne In a remarkable tour de force, Charles Hartshorne presents a lively and illuminating study of what major American philosophers have said about creativity. With a special talent for perceiving and elegantly expressing the essence of a position, Dr. Hartshorne details his reactions to friend and foe, demonstrating that philosophy at its best is dialogue. Noting that metaphysics is a major theme in the American philosophical tradition, he states that "nowhere has the topic been more persistently and searchingly investigated than in this country."

The past 15 years of leadership research have taught us a valuable lesson: There is more than one way to be a successful leader. The Charismatic, Ideological, and Pragmatic (CIP) approach to leadership showcases three unique yet equally viable pathways to leading and influencing others. This book reviews the history of the CIP model of leadership and summarizes the empirical findings supporting the framework. Emerging areas of leadership research on the CIP model are explored, including: followership, shared leadership, measurement, and gender. Contributions from a range of international academics provide readers with insight into the foundation of the CIP theory of leadership and into where the future of leadership perspectives are headed. It includes a chapter for practitioners seeking to understand the framework through an applied lens and offers evidence for a new scale designed to quantify a leader’s CIP profile. Finally, a revised theoretical framework, incorporating key findings to expand the model to meet the diverse needs of future researchers and leaders is offered. This thought-provoking volume will be essential reading for all scholars, researchers and students interested in the charismatic, ideological, and pragmatic approach to leadership, as well as professionals considering the introduction of a new leadership model.

Cities Built To Music written by Michael Bright and has been published by Ohio State University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1984 with Architecture categories.
"In August of 1861, a congress was convened in Antwerp to consider why it was that the nineteenth century had adopted no distinctive architectural style as its own. That such a meeting took place is of substantially greater importance than any business conducted and resolutions passed by the delegates, for it suggests the profound dissatisfaction with the state of architecture in Europe that pervaded the continent at the time. In England, the chief critic of the motley assortment of disharmonious styles was A.W. N. Pugin, who in 1843 , declared that architecture, along with the other arts, was passing through "a transitional state" (the phrase was to recur over and over again throughout the century in a variety of contexts) - an aesthetic wasteland in which, following the decay of the Renaissance, an anarchic individualism fueled by a runaway eclecticism and a shoddy reliance on shams and disguieses was ultimately to prevail. Later in the same decade, John Ruskin was to propose a stringent, indeed a radical, reform. Professor Bright undertakes an etiological explanation of why the Gothic style was able to satisfy the artistic expectations of the Victorians. He dismisses as only partly adequate the frequently offered answers - the "religious," which points to the intimate relations between Revivalist architects and the Ecclesiologists and between Pugin and Roman Catholicism, and the "literary," which relies on the immense popularity of the novels of Sir Walter Scott and the mania for all things medieval they inspired. Rather he finds in the return to a style that was dominant before the Renaissance, and in the rejection of the nineteenth century's earlier preference for the neoclassical, a reflection in architecture of the generally troubled state of Victorian society so apparent in the other arts of the period. Matthew Arnold's "ignorant armies clash by night," and Tennyson's Arthur "saw not whom he fought" in the "dim, weird battle of the west." John Stuart Mills identifies as "the first of the leading peculiarities of the present age... that it is an age of transition. Mankind have outgrown old institutions and old doctrines, and have not acquired new ones." Carlyle laments, "The Old has passed away: but alas, the New appears not in its stead." Restlessness, uncertainty, and confusion abound; and the idea is often repeated throughout the century that the momentum of change, far from slowing to the settled condition from which new and universal values can emerge, continues to accelerate at an alarming and vertiginous rate that cause Thomas Arnold to comment that "we have been living, as it were, the life of three hundred years in thirty," and that left his son, twenty years later, "Wandering between two worlds, one dead, / The other powerless to be born." For Matthew Arnold, it was culture that would provide the unity - the Scholar-Gypsy's "one aim, one business, one desire" - that was to be the cure for "this strange disease of modern life, / With its sick hurry, its divided aims." It was unity, too -"a singleness of aim, of a devotion to and community of effort in the advancement of art" - that Sir George Gilbert Scott urged, as its president, on his colleagues in the Institute of British Architects. For Pugin and a host of other artists and critics of art and society, unity lay in revival of the Gothic." --
