This book aims to explore the evidence supporting the therapeutic community (TC) modality as a uniquely effective approach to care of individuals living with opioid use disorder and other addictions, and also to identify salient mediators of improved outcome, including long-term treatment and removal from the opioid-associated environment. The book includes multiple international perspectives and is designed for worldwide appeal—for countries that have established some TCs with success, those looking to improve care, and those looking to build them for the first time. Written by experts in addiction psychiatry and medicine, this book describes the unique role of therapeutic communities in treating substance use disorders, how the model has changed over time and adapted to diverse sociocultural contexts and systems of care, and how the TC model may serve an important population in the context of the current opioid epidemic. The chapters are written so as to be accessible for clinicians across specialties and professions. The Opioid Epidemic and the Therapeutic Community Model is an excellent resource for all professionals interested in diverse and effective models of care to treat opioid use disorder and other addictions, including addiction medicine specialists, psychiatrists, psychologists, rehabilitation administrators, hospitalists, social workers, public health workers, students, and the interested public

The New Social Entrepreneurship written by Francesco Perrini and has been published by Edward Elgar Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-01-01 with Business & Economics categories.

This book aims to define a novel conception of what social entrepreneurship (SE) actually is, and what it is not, starting from a sharp and focused vision of SE: it entails innovations designed to explicitly improve societal well-being, housed within entrepreneurial organizations, which initiate change in society. In so doing, it provides a critical and comprehensive framework for current and future research in the area. Francesco Perrini adopts a novel approach to the SE phenomenon, considering it as a dynamic process created and managed by innovative social entrepreneur (an individual or team) who strives to create new social values in the market and community at large. By now SE has attained a wider and more enthusiastic acceptance in corporate thinking and practice than in the literature. This double line of reasoning, partly theoretical and partly practitioner-based, drives the bottom line of the book. In the first part The New Social Entrepreneurship looks for a consistent answer to a muddle of still-unresolved questions: How can SE be defined? How can SEVs be identified? What are the main dimensions along which organizations vary and what factors lead to success? What does success mean? Does the way in which an SEV is designed matter? Does it make sense to talk about a social business plan? Is an SEV aligned with traditional sources of financing? And so on. In the second part, the book changes perspective, examining several practical examples of how perspectives on SE are translated into concrete phenomena: 'LocalFeed', CafeDirect, The Sekem Initiative, Teleserinita, the NYC Watershed Agreement, and sustainable tourism in Turkey and so on. They illustrate theoretical frameworks, each enlightening specific aspects of SE and making theory and practice comparisons.

Integrating gender into all aspects of drug policy, including the criminal justice system. In its efforts to place human rights at the heart of drug policies, the Pompidou Group has decided to pursue further the work already undertaken towards integrating a gender dimension into drug policy by developing a handbook covering different drug policy areas. It seeks to promote gender sensitivity in drug responses as essential leverage to reduce health inequities and to respect human rights, especially the rights to diversity and dignity for women, men and non-binary people. The publication begins with an overview of epidemiological evidence on gender-based differences in drug use and related consequences. The handbook aims at providing policy makers and practitioners in the drug field with evidence-based and operational recommendations to develop and implement policies and interventions that better integrate specific gender needs (gender-sensitive approach) and support more gender equity (gender-transformative approach) for people concerned with the provision of drug-related prevention and care (risk and harm reduction, treatment, reintegration), including in the criminal justice system. Faithful to the Pompidou Group’s objective of ensuring a link between research, policy and practice, this handbook first explores theoretical views about gender and drug policy, draws on available scientific knowledge and presents recommendations and examples for practice. It is based on extensive debate and a consensus of experts from 13 countries and various professional backgrounds, for cross-cultural relevance.

A pragmatic new business model for sustainability that outlines eight steps that range from exploring a mission to promoting innovation; with case studies. Many recent books make the case for businesses to become more sustainable, but few explain the specifics. In this book, Francisco Szekely and Zahir Dossa offer a pragmatic new business model for sustainability that extends beyond the traditional framework of the triple bottom line, describing eight steps that range from exploring a vision and establishing a strategy to implementing the strategy and promoting innovation. Szekely and Dossa argue that businesses and organizations need to move away from the business case for sustainability toward a sustainable business model. That is, businesses should go beyond the usual short-term focus on minimizing harm while maximizing profits. Instead, businesses on the path to sustainability should, from the start, focus on addressing a societal need and view profitability not as an end but as a means to support the sustainable organization. Szekely and Dossa explore key problems organizations face when pursuing a sustainability agenda. Each chapter presents one of the eight steps, describes a business dilemma for sustainability, provides a theoretically grounded strategic framework, offers case studies that illustrate the dilemma, and summarizes key findings; the case studies draw on the experiences of such companies as Tesla Motors, Patagonia, TOMs, and Panera. The book emphasizes leadership, arguing that leaders who question the status quo, inspire others, and take risks are essential for achieving sustainable business practices.

How globalization is undermining sustainable social environments for children This book uses the ecological model of child development together with ethnographic and comparative studies of two small villages, in Italy and the United States, as its framework for examining the well-being of children in the aftermath of the Great Recession. Global forces, far from being distant and abstract, are revealed as wreaking havoc in children’s environments even in economically advanced countries. Falling birth rates, deteriorating labor conditions, fraying safety nets, rising rates of child poverty, and a surge in racism and populism in Europe and the United States are explored in the petri dish of the village. Globalism’s discontents—unrestrained capitalism and technological change, rising inequality, mass migration, and the juggernaut of climate change—are rapidly destabilizing and degrading the social and physical environments necessary to our collective survival and well-being. This crisis demands a radical restructuring of our macrosystemic value systems. Woodhouse proposes an ecogenerist theory that asks whether our policies and politics foster environments in which children and families can flourish. It proposes, as a benchmark, the family-supportive human-rights principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The book closes by highlighting ways in which individuals can engage at the local and regional levels in creating more just and sustainable worlds that are truly fit for children.
