Take flight a-dragon-back. The dark elves, enslaved for centuries, have a legend foretold of one who will come, Edraith the king, bringing justice and freedom and raising the dragon sword of the ancient kings. Legends tell of a connection to the dragons, both good and evil, of magic connected to the core of the earth. A young slave who refuses to be chained and loves the wrong woman now raises that very sword and finds himself in a series of epic journeys, wielding a magic rooted in the blood of the dragons and giving him a dragon soul. He discovers in himself a depth of friendship and love that was never expected as he seeks a way for his heart and freedom for his oppressed people.

The Caroline poet George Sandys had an exceptionally interesting early career as traveller and colonist; this study of his work following his return to England sheds new light on the expression of religious and political moderation prior to the Civil War. The poet George Sandys is one of the most interesting figures of the Renaissance period, his life and career encompassing a number of varied aspects. As a colonialist leader in Virginia he and his colleagues pursued a lenient policy towards the Indians which nearly cost the colony its existence. Returning to England, and settling at Great Tew along with other poets such as William Chillingworth and Lord Falkland, he won limited favour at the Caroline court; although he was loyal to the king, and adopted a richly Laudian style for his religious verse, he was implacably opposed to the divisive and confrontational policies of the Laudian church, and became an increasingly outspoken critic of absolutist government. His last work, a translation of a Latin religious play by Hugo Grotius, was the first in a series of literary attacks by moderate Royalists on Archbishop Laud. This book, the first recent examination of his life and work, sheds new light both on an unjustly neglected figure, and on the literature of religious and political moderation prior to the Civil War. JAMES ELLISON is Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Strathclyde.

Medea - simply to mention her name conjures up echoes and cross-connections from Antiquity to the present. The vengeful wife, the murderess of her own children, the frail, suicidal heroine, the archetypal Bad Mother, the smitten maiden, the barbarian, the sorceress, the abused victim, the case study for a pathology. For more than two thousand years, she has arrested the eye in paintings, reverberated in opera, called to us from the stage. She demands the most interdisciplinary of study, from ancient art to contemporary law and medicine; she is no more to be bound by any single field of study than by any single take on her character. The contributors to this wide-ranging volume are Brian Arkins, Angela J. Burns, Anthony Bushell, Richard Buxton, Peter A. Campbell, Margherita Carucci, Daniela Cavallaro, Robert Cowan, Hilary Emmett, Edith Hall, Laurence D. Hurst, Ekaterini Kepetzis, Ivar Kvistad, Catherine Leglu, Yixu Lue, Edward Phillips, Elizabeth Prettejohn, Paula Straile-Costa, John Thorburn, Isabelle Torrance, Terence Stephenson, and Amy Wygant.
